Trent Alexander-Arnold paid respect to Diogo Jota, whose untimely demise was revealed on Thursday morning.
Trent Alexander-Arnold has paid respect to former teammate Diogo Jota, whose untimely death was revealed on Thursday morning.
The 28-year-old and his brother Andre Silva died in an automobile accident in Zamora, northern Spain, in the early hours of Thursday morning, according to the Spanish Guardia Civil. The siblings were driving on the A52 when their vehicle caught fire.
Witnesses who called 911 say the automobile, a Lamborghini, became “engulfed in flames” after a tire blew out while overtaking.
“The information that we have so far is that the car, which was a Lamborghini, was in a road traffic accident and left the road due to a tyre blowout while overtaking,” said a Guardia Civil press release.
“It happened early in the morning, at 00:30 BST, in Cernadilla, Zamora. The car caught fire, and both occupants were killed.
Jota died just days after marrying long-term partner Rute Cardoso, the mother of his three children, and weeks after helping Portugal win the UEFA Nations League for the second time.
A rush of tributes were paid to the late Portugal international by Liverpool, his past clubs, Cristiano Ronaldo, Jurgen Klopp, and current Liverpool manager Arne Slot.
On Thursday evening, a saddened Alexander-Arnold took to Instagram to share a touching tribute to a “great teammate” and “true friend” with whom he shared a changing room at Anfield for five years.
“It’s so difficult to find the right words when your head and heart are struggling to accept the loss of someone you care so much about,” the Real Madrid and England right-back wrote accompanying a photo carousel.
“Diogo, your family was your everything. They were everything. Our hearts break for Rute, his children, and his parents. For Andre as well. brothers and greatest buddies.
“When it’s less painful, I hope to remember Diogo with a great smile. So many laughs and great memories. He was an excellent teammate and sincere buddy.
“Forever number twenty. “Rest in peace, Diogo.”
Liverpool honours Diogo Jota by immortalizing his shirt number.
Jota and Alexander-Arnold won the FA Cup and Carabao Cup together last season, and they also helped Liverpool win their 20th league title.
His final goal was the victory in the Merseyside derby against Everton, his 65th overall since coming from Wolves in 2020.
Following several fan requests, Liverpool declared that the No.20 will be “rightly immortalised” in honour of Jota’s memory.
According to priest Jose Manuel Macedo, Jota and his brother’s wake will be held Friday afternoon at the Sao Cosme Chapel, followed by the funeral on Saturday morning at the Catholic church next door.
“The brothers’ bodies will arrive at the resurrection chapel for the wake tomorrow, followed by the funeral at 10 a.m. on Saturday,” he told CNN Portugal, via the Daily Mail.
“We’re available to celebrate [their life] with everyone and to share the pain and the Christian hope.”
