Trent Alexander-Arnold breaks his silence on Anfield return after Real Madrid draw Liverpool in Champions League

The England right defender is poised to return to Anfield this season after leaving Liverpool for Real Madrid in June.

Trent Alexander-Arnold reacted quickly after learning that he will be returning to Anfield with Real Madrid in the Champions League league round, after the club was drawn against Liverpool.

Alexander-Arnold, 26, left Liverpool for Real Madrid after the 2024/25 Premier League title-winning campaign.

In June, he was announced as a Real Madrid player after Los Blancos paid the Reds about £8.5 million to terminate his contract ahead of the Club World Cup.

The England international has since made seven competitive appearances for his new club, recording two assists.

Upon his arrival in the Spanish city, the Liverpudlian made it plain that one of the reasons for his decision was his desire “to win a lot of trophies and be a champion”.

And no team is more closely connected with Champions League success than Real Madrid, which has won the title on 15 separate occasions.

Last season, however, they were crushed 5-1 on aggregate by Arsenal in the quarter-finals, resulting in a trophyless campaign.

This time, Madrid, now led by Xabi Alonso, will face English opponents in the eight-match 36-team group phase.

Manchester City, led by Pep Guardiola, will go to the Santiago Bernabeu, while the La Liga side will meet Liverpool at Anfield.

Of course, the teams met at Anfield in last season’s league campaign, with the Reds prevailing 2-0 thanks to goals from Alexis MacAllister and Cody Gakpo.

Trent was named to Liverpool’s squad but did not appear on the bench.

It is yet unknown when Alexander-Arnold will return to his former club, as fixture dates and kick-off times have yet to be confirmed.

Nonetheless, the 26-year-old was quick to react, posting a graphic of Real’s fixtures to his Instagram account just minutes after the draw.
