Willum Thor Willumsson, a Birmingham City midfielder, is thought to have voiced a preference for his future club, with a possible move from St. Andrew’s looming before the transfer deadline on Monday.
The Iceland international has sparked a lot of attention this January, with Dutch news outlet Gelderlander claiming he has “several” suitors.
The midfielder has slid down the pecking order at St. Andrew’s, making only five starts this season, despite missing a significant amount of the season due to injury.
Birmingham signed Willumsson from Eredivisie side Go Ahead Eagles in the summer of 2024 for a fee of £3.5 million, and the playmaker could return to the Eredivisie.
Willum Thor Willumsson hopes to return to the Eredivisie after revealing his transfer preferences.

Gelderlander reports that another Dutch team, NEC Nijmegen, is interested in the Icelandic midfielder.
According to the same source, out of the various possibilities available to Willumsson, he has stated a preference for joining the NEC over any other potentially interested party.
The Eredivisie club is now fourth in the Netherlands’ top division, four points behind Feyenoord in second and two points behind Ajax in third, and they are believed to be looking for a defender to help them climb the league.
Willumsson has not appeared in any competition more than the Netherlands’ top flight, so if a move is made, he will be returning to a league he is familiar with.
Willum Thor Willumsson’s exit would benefit Birmingham City and Chris Davies.

Willumsson joined Birmingham on a four-year contract, which means he will be with the club until the summer of 2028.
That puts the Blues in an extremely good position when it comes to negotiating a fee, especially as they are still finding minutes for the midfielder, removing another possible advantage for buying clubs like NEC.
However, it appears like Birmingham may eventually outgrow the need for Willumsson’s skills, so it makes sense to cash in now while the market is still strong for him.
The end of the January window will increase demand for NEC as they run out of other choices, which should push up the price and help finance the Blues’ significant outlays this winter on players such as Carlos Vicente and August Priske.
Willumsson was an excellent signing for Birmingham to help them get out of League One, but with interest high, moving him now may make sense for all parties involved.
