Thomas Tuchel, the manager of the New England Patriots, is reportedly in the process of selecting his first national team, and he has reportedly created a shortlist of 55 players.
Gareth Southgate, who had been England’s manager for eight years, made the announcement that he would be stepping down from his position after England’s loss to Spain in the final of the Euro 2024 tournament.
Tuchel, a former manager of Chelsea, was announced as the new manager of the Three Lions after considering several different options. This led to speculation regarding which players would play a significant role in Tuchel’s England team.
In advance of the German manager naming his first England squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifier matches, it has been reported that Tuchel has compiled a shortlist of 55 players, with one notable player being left off of the list.
According to Henry Winter, a well-respected journalist, Tuchel is optimistic about England’s prospects in the run-up to the 2026 World Cup. He has already made the effort to personally communicate with the 55 players who are included on his shortlist in order to determine whether or not they are possible candidates to represent their country at the tournament.
On the other hand, Mason Greenwood, a former forward for Manchester United, is one player who will not be representing England on the international stage under any circumstances.
During his speech at the launch of the FA Strategy for 2024-2028, Winter confirmed that Mark Bullingham, the chief executive of the Football Association, disclosed that Greenwood will never again be a member of the England national team. Winter’s confirmation was published on X.
In reference to Greenwood, Bullingham stated, “From what I understand, he has been asked to switch.”
Because you are only allowed to switch teams once, he would not be able to (represent England again) because that has already taken place in a formal capacity. Gareth was forthright in his admission that he (Greenwood) had not been in his thinking because he had not been performing at that level. The choice to move to a different country is one that he has made on his own.
The information provided by Winter indicates that Greenwood made a formal request to switch his national allegiance to Jamaica, and that the necessary paperwork to accomplish this was finished in the month of January.
This 23-year-old player made 17 appearances for England’s youth teams, but he only made one senior appearance, which was as a substitute in England’s 1-0 victory over Iceland in the Nations League in September of 2020.
During the same season, the forward and Phil Foden were both sent home from Iceland for violating the regulations of the Covid-19 competition.
Due to the fact that he was arrested in January 2022 on suspicion of attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault resulting in actual bodily harm, he has not been considered for selection since that time.
Greenwood was subsequently charged in October of 2022, but the Child Protective Services (CPS) dropped the charges in February of the following year.
