Sheffield United’s season can clearly be divided into many parts, with the Blades still hoping to make the play-offs despite a significant points disparity that must be overcome in the coming weeks.
Chris Wilder has put his team back on track after a terrible six-game run under Ruben Selles that began the current season.
The boyhood Blade has seen it everything at Bramall Lane over three times in charge, including a three-year run from League One to ninth place in the Premier League from 2017-2020.
However, it’s fair to say that taking the Steel City side from the bottom of the Championship to potential redemption through the play-offs, a year after suffering play-off final heartbreak against Sunderland at Wembley Stadium, would rank high on Wilder’s personal list of accomplishments.
On paper, United have a squad capable of finishing in the top six, thanks to experience in all parts of the game as well as creative powers in midfield and attack.
Gustavo Hamer, the Blades’ Dutch-Brazilian ace, possesses all three of these qualities and continues to have a major influence when it comes to tipping matches in Wilder’s favour.
While the 28-year-old’s overall numbers this season continue to seem excellent on the surface – he has once again reached double figures in terms of assists – the £15 million signing from Coventry City and last season’s Championship Player of the Season has not been without criticism.
And, with United wanting to finish the season on a high note, they will have to do so without their creative director, who has an issue that has gone unnoticed – one that must be addressed in order for his team to succeed.
Gustavo Hamer’s poor discipline record at Sheffield United as Chris Wilder reveals devastating blow.

As previously stated, Championship observers are already familiar with Hamer’s flare on the pitch, having been as influential for the Blades as he was for the Sky Blues.
Indeed, the midfield ace was one of the few bright spots amid the club’s disastrous relegation from the Premier League in his debut season at Bramall Lane, before continuing to shine last season.
The versatile figure has once again provided numerous critical and dazzling moments under both Selles and Wilder this season, notably a strike from halfway against Birmingham City in the EFL Cup in August.
Unsurprisingly, Hamer’s form and quality have resulted in several Premier League and European clubs pursuing his signature, with Trabzonspor showing a considerable interest in the just closed winter transfer window.
While Wilder’s main priority with the playmaker is to tie him down to a new contract, the 58-year-old’s latest revelation that Hamer will miss the upcoming games against Norwich City and Birmingham after receiving his tenth booking of the season against West Bromwich Albion highlights a discipline issue that needs to be addressed.
“It’s a well-balanced group, which was our goal in January. Fill some holes as well to provide some rivalry for positions. So, Gus is missing, which is frustrating, but the squad has won games both with and without him,” Wilder explained.
Since joining United, Hamer has received 33 yellow cards, 10 of which have occurred this season, resulting in the aforementioned suspension.
So far this season, the Blades have been without him in seven league games, winning three against Watford, Blackburn Rovers, and Stoke City, drawing once against Queens Park Rangers, and losing to Preston North End, Derby County, and Coventry.
Last season, Hamer also missed two games owing to suspension-related bans: the 2-0 win over Stoke in October 2024 and the shocking 3-0 loss to Hull City 14 months ago.
Sheffield United’s season could be determined without Gustavo Hamer’s involvement

By the time Hamer returns to action against Wrexham on March 21st, United’s destiny in the crowded play-off competition may have been settled, depending on how their games with the Canaries and Blues go.
Norwich have been one of the best-performing teams in the division since Philippe Clement took over in November, while Birmingham are in a similar position to United in the table, with Chris Davies under pressure following a string of dismal performances.
As a result, the club’s chances of retaining their prized asset this summer may be determined, with a return to the top flight appearing to be the best option.
