The exact amount of money Swansea City must pay to appoint ex-Liverpool coach Vitor Matos

Swansea City will have to pay a €1 million (£880,000) compensation fee in order to sign Vitor Matos from Maritimo.

According to Portuguese publication O Jogo, the second-tier club has no interest in talking with the Swans for the coach.

The Welsh club is looking for a new manager after parting ways with Alan Sheehan earlier this month following a 4-1 defeat at Ipswich Town.

The Irishman was named as permanent head coach in April of this year, but a bad start to the season has resulted in his dismissal just 15 games into 2025/26.

Swansea were initially linked with Kim Hellberg, but the Swede is apparently set to join Championship rivals Middlesbrough instead.

Swansea must pay the compensation sum for Vitor Matos.

Swansea are expected to pay roughly £880,000 to install Matos as manager.

Maritimo is said to have no interest in negotiating a lesser price than the one specified in his contract’s release clause.

The 37-year-old was appointed in the summer, and he has overseen a strong start to the season, with the team sitting third in the table after 11 games.

Matos, who formerly worked as a coach at Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp, is apparently one of several candidates to take over the Championship club, along with former manager Russell Martin.

It remains to be seen whether the club will agree to pay the £880,000 compensation sum for the Portuguese coach.

Matos took over Maritimo as his first managerial position following five years as a coach at Liverpool, as well as an assistant to Pepijn Lijnders at RB Salzburg.

Swansea are presently 18th in the Championship table and will return to play this weekend against Bristol City on November 22nd at 12.30pm.

Swansea will have to put their money where their mouth is with Vitor Matos.

If Swansea honestly believe Matos is the guy to lead the club forward, the £880,000 compensation sum should be a worthwhile investment.

This is where the new owners’ commitment to investing in the team will be tested, and it will not look good if this is enough to turn them off.

Middlesbrough apparently had to pay a compensation fee for Hellberg, so Swansea must have been aware that any appointment to replace Sheehan would require some cash.

It remains to be seen whether he will be a success at Swansea, and while his appointment will be a significant risk, this is an opportunity for the owners to put their money where their mouth is.
