There are many amazing athletes who play in the Premier League, which is regarded as one of the most physically demanding leagues in the world. Sometimes this will be a tall guy who can take use of their physicality, and other times it will be a short player with plenty of speed to burn.
The football website Transfermarkt has officially made public the average heights of every Premier League team for the 2024–2025 campaign. Some teams that were thought to be strong now have smaller players that play above their height, which has caused some surprises.
Contrary to popular belief, the teams in the lower part of the standings are not the ones that have been hoarding monsters in order to prioritise set pieces. The average height of each Premier League team is examined here, starting with the tallest and going down to the shortest.
1Brentford
Average height: 186cm
Without knowing the facts, a lot of people would assume that Brentford would be among the tallest teams in the Premier League. Sepp van den Berg, Ethan Pinnock, Nathan Collins, and Kristoffer Ajer are among the giants who occupy three centre-back positions in the starting lineup. As Thomas Frank’s team consistently causes issues for teams attempting to attack via crosses into the penalty area, these four are among the most formidable defenders in the air.
Frank’s team has not suffered much despite losing the talismanic Ivan Toney, who was equally skilled at getting the ball on the deck or scraping with rival defenders in the air, in the summer. The English attacker is a nuisance for many defenders in the top tier. With good cause, Bryan Mbeumo, a little and smaller forward than Toney, has taken over and is being linked to a move to Arsenal.
2. Newcastle United
Height on average: 186 cm
At 6′ 7″, Dan Burn is currently the tallest outfield player in the Premier League. This indicates that the defence for Newcastle United is taller than most of the division’s goalkeepers. Regarding that subject, Nick Pope is among the league’s best goalkeepers, while Sven Botman and Fabian Schar, the centre backs who defend his goal, are also formidable opponents. Perhaps as a result of that, the Magpies finished the 2022–2023 season with the league’s joint-best defensive record, giving up just 33 goals in 38 games.
Alexander Isak, a Swedish forward who is dangerous with both his feet and his air, is quickly rising to the top of the English game’s scoring rankings. Although he may not be the strongest player in history, his height and lightweight build offer him an advantage over most opponents in terms of size and speed.
3 Average height in Chelsea: 185 cm
Since Todd Boehly came over as manager, Stamford Bridge has been a talent hotspot, but obviously, the strategy hasn’t always involved bringing in a lot of tall players. Among the technically exceptional players who have joined the team in the last 18 months are Mykhailo Mudryk, Moises Caicedo, and Enzo Fernández. Despite their exceptional skill on the ball, these players lack height.
Since taking over at the beginning of the 2024–25 season, manager Enzo Maresca has had little trouble getting his team to play the style of football that is desired. Tosin Adarabioyo and Benoit Badashiale’s height has also helped. Given that the Blues have one of the most bloated squads in the division, it would be an odd decision for the team to enter the transfer market once more. Lucas Bergstrom, a young goalie, is 6’7″ and among the tallest players in Premier League history.
4 The average height of Aston Villa is 185 cm.
Aston Villa, the team led by former Gunners manager Unai Emery, has joined Chelsea in having an average squad height of 185 cm. The Villans, who face teams like Manchester City, Liverpool, and Arsenal, have established themselves as one of the top four contenders. Making this ideal a reality requires a range of player profiles, and Emery’s club has them all. Despite being among the league’s top midfield units the previous season, John McGinn, Boubacar Kamara, and Douglas Luiz are by no means the largest players in their positions. The latter’s departure and Amadou Onana’s acquisition aided in that.
Diego Carlos and Pau Torres are excellent ball-playing defenders, and the former La Liga pair has established a dominant defensive tandem, especially at Villa Park. Despite having less playing time in his preferred centre-back position, Ezri Konsa has performed brilliantly as a backup full-back, much like White at Arsenal. Jaden Philogene and Leon Bailey considerably reduce the average height regardless of their playing time, but the explosive wingers offer incredible speed while attacking.
5 Hotspur of Tottenham
Height on average: 185 cm
Even though Ange Postecoglou’s style of football is far more aesthetically pleasing than the methods used by Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte, the Greek-Australian manager still places a lot of attention on the game’s physical component. Guglielmo Vicario has no trouble filling the goalmouth, and Radu Dragusin is a tall center-half who isn’t a certified starter in north London.
In the summer of 2023, Micky van de Ven was added to the starting lineup to start alongside the inconsistent Cristian Romero at the centre of the back line. The large Dutch defender not only provided much-needed height at the back but also lightning-fast speed, allowing the team to use their new high defensive line without worrying about being unable to track back. As a result, during the 2024–2025 season, relatively few teams have violently harassed Spurs on the pitch.
6. Everton
Height on average: 185 cm
Sean Dyche is the only person who could have put together the Premier League’s most dominant-looking squad. When healthy, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Tim Iroegbunam form one of the tallest midfield tandems in front of the shorter Idrissa Gueye, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin is an athletic force at the top of the pitch, making the Everton team’s spine a particularly intimidating proposition for opponents.
Even though James Tarkowski and Jarrod Branthwaite are one of the most formidable centre-back duos in the league, defeating these physical monsters is not a guarantee. The Toffees’ squad, which is full of tall players eager to put in a lot of effort, is nearly ideal for the well-known Dyche-ball phenomena.
Nottingham Forest No. 7
Height on average: 184 cm
They used to have one of the largest Premier League squads in terms of numbers and the joint-tallest roster on average. Since returning to the English Premier League in 2022, Nottingham Forest has added an incredible amount of players, some of whom are formidable opponents. One of the best and most physically strong strikers in the division is Taiwo Awoniyi, and his teammates, like Chris Wood, are also taller than six feet.
Although the Forest team has several smaller players with excellent technical skill, such Morgan Gibbs-White and Anthony Elanga, who lower the team’s average height, a team that frequently uses a three-man defensive system would inevitably have some giants. When considering players who stand out from the others in the Garibaldi’s red and white, players like Willy Boly, Morato, and Nikola Milenkovic also come to mind.
8 Fulham Height on average: 184 cm
Aleksandar Mitrovic may have been Marco Silva’s devil up front, but the Portuguese manager replaced him with a player who is actually only a little bit taller than the Serbian goal scorer. Leading the Fulham line, Raul Jimenez bears the heavy burden of keeping the ball aloft and enabling his teammates to go up the pitch. After having trouble finding the net near the end of his time at Wolverhampton Wanderers, the Mexican has returned to his game and played this role flawlessly.
In front of Bernd Leno’s goal, Joachim Andersen, Issa Diop, and Sander Berge form a towering triangle of men. Because the German is no slouch, it has been difficult for any opponent to physically defeat this trio. The squad’s average height is undoubtedly reduced by Reiss Nelson and Adama Traore, but the quick wingers are also essential to enhancing the skills of the previously mentioned Jimenez up top.
9. Manchester United
Height on average: 184 cm
With an average height of 184 cm, Manchester United’s team is comparable to Fulham’s. The team’s tallest players are on the attack and defence, while the midfield is the weakest position. Joshua Zirkzee, Rasmus Hojlund, Leny Yoro, and Harry Maguire are some of the biggest players who frequently play for the Red Devils.
Even though he scored a lot of goals last season, Casemiro is not the Premier League’s most physically dominating defensive midfielder. Red Devils captain Bruno Fernandes, Christian Eriksen, and Mason Mount are all under six feet tall. The tallest asset available to Ruben Amorim and his team is Altay Bayindir, who has established himself as one of the top backup goalkeepers in the world at the moment.
10 Crystal Palace
Height on average: 184 cm
Regular Premier League viewers might not notice right away that Crystal Palace is one of the top 10 tallest teams in the league, unlike the prior entries. Since Dean Henderson, Matt Turner, Jean-Philippe Mateta, and Remi Matthews are all physically strong players at either end of the field, the goalkeepers and strikers in the team bear the brunt of the workload this time.
Even though Marc Guehi is currently an England international, the Eagles’ centre-back is not among the best in his position in the Premier League. His partner in crime, Trevoh Chalobah, compensates for his lack of height, and he nevertheless competes quite well in the air. Oliver Glasner’s team is well-founded, and in order to complement the playmakers like Ismaila Sarr and Eberechi Eze, a solid group of players with physical prowess is crucial.
11 West Ham United
Height on average: 183 cm
Jarrod Bowen, a winger who is shorter than 5’8″, may have once tied for the most headed goals in the 2023–24 Premier League season, but this does not necessarily reflect his height. It more accurately reflects the forward’s astute movement and foresight throughout the season. When the ball is in the air, the opposition players will focus primarily on Tomas Soucek, Konstantinos Mavropanos, Edson Alvarez, and Maximilian Kilman because they are all powerful centres for West Ham.
The Jamaican is a physical challenge for defenders to handle, making Michail Antonio a unique proposition. Even though they are only the 11th tallest club in the top flight, Julen Lopetegui’s team is still among the hardest to deal with from corners and free kicks, even though they have lost James Ward-Prowse’s outstanding set-piece delivery.
12 The average height in Liverpool is 183 cm.
In the summer of 2023, when Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, James Milner, and Naby Keita left after many years of service, Jurgen Klopp was given the responsibility of completely revamping his midfield during the summer transfer window. The former RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich midfielders Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch have given the Reds’ engine room a considerably more commanding appearance, and they provide the Liverpool squad a lot of height.
You have one of the Premier League’s most physically intimidating starting lineups when you include established monsters like Darwin Núñez, Ibrahima Konate, and Virgil van Dijk. Players of all sizes are well represented, although given the first-team names listed above, it may come as a surprise that the Merseyside club is ranked so low.
13 The average height in Ipswich Town is 183 cm.
After the Tractor Boys earned promotion to the Premier League for the first time in a long time last season, Ipswich Town will have to fight to stay in the league. With a defence that includes some enormous players who put their heads on any ball that comes into their general range, Kieran McKenna’s team is more than willing to play dirty when necessary against the more technical opponents.
The beast that is Arijanet Muric, a former Burnley resident, is in the net, while Christian Walton, his backup pick, is slightly smaller at 1.95m. Jacob Greaves, Luke Woolfenden, and Cameron Burgess, the centre-back triad, are likewise taller. However, they do have certain players with lower average heights, like Sammie Szmodics, Omari Hutchinson, and captain Sam Morsy.
14 The average height in Leicester City is 183 cm.
Like the previously stated Ipswich, Leicester City is trying to avoid relegating to the second division at the end of the season due to a change in management. In order to stay afloat in the Premier League, the recently appointed Ruud van Nistelrooy, who was once among the greatest attackers in Premier League history, will turn to his team’s tallest players, Jannik Vestergaard and Boubakay Soumare.
Their collective lack of height in relation to the other 19 clubs in the league, caused by the diminutive size of Bobby De Cordova-Reid, Oliver Sipp, and Ricardo Pereira, could mean the difference between joy and disappointment in May 2025. Naturally, they can be challenging on the pitch, but in the high-stress environment of the Premier League, a certain amount of aggressiveness is always required. Do the Foxes lack that?
15 Arsenal Height: 182 cm on average
Particularly during Arsene Wenger’s final years at the Emirates and Unai Emery’s lacklustre tenure thereafter, Arsenal has long been accused of being a soft team. The club that had terrifying players like Tony Adams, Martin Keown, and Patrick Vieira in the 1990s and early 2000s was very different from the Gunners now. However, Mikel Arteta has given the team fresh life during his time there, and at the start of the 2023–24 season, the team signed two players who are taller than six feet, Declan Rice and Kai Havertz.
Gabriel and William Saliba bolster an already formidable spine of a team hoping to contend for the championship against teams like Manchester City and Liverpool. Ben White, a former Brighton player, occasionally fills in as a third central defence, while summer signing Mikel Merino also contributes a sizable amount to the team’s engine room when he plays. Given that the Poole-born star was formerly a centre-back, his height comes in quite helpful during this in-game swap.
16 Albion, Brighton & Hove
Height on average: 182 cm
Everyone’s favourite team in the Premier League, Brighton & Hove Albion, has frequently defied the odds because the Seagulls play well against the best teams in the league. On average, Fabian Hurzeler’s team has one of the Premier League’s lowest rosters. The team’s most talented players, Tariq Lamptey, Yankuba Minteh, Kaoru Mitoma, and Simon Adingra, are a few examples of the outstanding football played at the AMEX. Instead of being a physical specimen, each of these athletes is more like a technician.
When selected over Danny Welbeck and Joao Pedro, the Irishman, who is among the Premier League’s top adolescents, adds a new dimension to the assault. Hurzeler can alter the game in a number of ways thanks to this depth, and it also gives the opposition players something new to be concerned about. Lewis Dunk is one of the league’s most underappreciated defenders due to his ability to pass, and the English centre-back is always there for his team when they need him.
17Wolverhampton Wanderers
Average height: 182cm
After Gary O’Neil was predicted to struggle and the team was predicted to be in the relegation zone, Wolverhampton Wanderers have frequently been seen as the surprise package of England’s Premier Division. This is untrue, though, since the Old Gold have frequently humiliated some of the best teams and have even managed to draw with Chelsea, Tottenham, and Manchester City.
Andre, Mario Lemina, and Joao Gomes are the team’s ever-increasing heartbeats, and the starting lineup has a nice balance of speed and power. At their best, Matheus Cunha and Hwang-Hee Chan contribute to one of the division’s most technically proficient strike units; nonetheless, their lack of height considerably lowers the squad’s average. Despite this, Sasa Kalajdzic, who is always hurt, is a tall two-meter player.
18 Bournemouth
Height on average: 181 cm
Under Andoni Iraola’s leadership, Bournemouth is currently changing from a club that had to fight for every point in the Premier League to one that controls the ball and depends more on technical skill. Though the massive midfielder has frequently been used as a backup under Iraola, who emphasises the need for control on the ball, Philip Billing played a significant role in Gary O’Neil’s Cherries team that survived the drop in 2022–2023.
Since joining from Juventus in the summer, Dean Huijsen has been among the league’s top centre backs. The defender has a talent for outplaying centre forwards. Among the lesser players who make up one of the smallest teams in the English top division are Marcus Tavernier, Max Aarons, Justin Kluivert, and Lewis Cook, while Huijsen is the tallest player who frequently starts for the team.
19 Southampton
Height on average: 181 cm
When Russell Martin was in charge, Southampton’s inability to change their strategy in Premier League matches hindered their ability to produce results. Even though the south coast-based team had one of the tallest players in Premier League history, Paul Onuachu, at their disposal, their lack of size in the roster likely didn’t help. Goalkeepers Joe Lumley and Alex McCarthy also mention their average height.
People like Adam Lallana and Ryan Fraser, who are renowned for being extremely short, are at the other end of the height scale. The newly hired Ivan Juric and their new management team must concentrate on utilising elements of the beautiful game that don’t require a lot of size, like playing it nicely on the carpet, if the Saints are to avoid dropping come May.
20 Average height in Manchester City: 180 cm
Although it would be reasonable to assume that a team with Rodri screening the defence and primarily playing four big men in the backline would rank higher on this list, Manchester City has the smallest roster in the top tier. Although neither Nathan Ake nor Josko Gvardiol are naturally centre defenders, their physical size enables the Englishman to play at left-back when necessary. Kyle Walker is not a centre-back by nature.
Being one of the league’s largest strikers, Erling Haaland raises the average by 194 cm. The 2023 IFFHS best player has scored three goals since joining Pep Guardiola and company, and is widely regarded as one of the top football players in the world. However, short playmakers like Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden provide a lot of opportunities.
