Teddy Sheringham Named Worst England Player He Played With

Teddy Sheringham, a former striker for Manchester United and Tottenham, named a former Liverpool player as the worst teammate he has had while playing for his country. One of the best England number nines of his generation, the renowned center-forward could provide for players like Alan Shearer as well as be the primary goal threat.

Sheringham participated in three major tournaments and made 51 appearances for the Three Lions, scoring eleven goals. Despite having the chance to play with some of the best players in the nation, including as David Beckham and Paul Gascoigne, the 58-year-old was quick to identify the worst England player he had ever teamed up with.

In a 2017 live interview, Sheringham appeared as a guest with former Nottingham Forest colleague Stuart Pearce. Bradley Walsh, host and broadcaster of The Chase, asked Sheringham who he thought was the worst player he has played with in his nation’s iconic white.

Sheringham didn’t take long to respond, but Pearce took his time before responding with Carlton Palmer. The former West Ham United player elaborated on his justification, saying:

“I have a decent one. Right now, there’s a guy on the radio. He pretends to be the world’s greatest gamer while chatting for fun. He was a good player in his day, but I witnessed his debut while he was playing for England. Although I wasn’t playing at the time, I was in the squad. I watched the match. Stan Collymore is incredibly surprising and gives out a lot of stick.

The audience erupted in cheers as Collymore was revealed, evidently enjoying Sheringham’s forceful reply. Two of the three England caps earned by the former Bradford City and Aston Villa attacker were in friendlies. Despite playing 90 minutes in all of his games, he did not contribute to any goals.

Collymore on His International Career

The striker retired from the game in 2001

Some supporters of Collymore’s time believe the attacker was gifted enough to earn more than the three caps he earned. The man himself, however, has a different view, having previously asserted that Eddie Howe is not Newcastle’s ideal manager. Following his retirement in 2001, Collymore told The Guardian:

“When I was younger, I set three goals for myself. to play football professionally, which I did for ten or twelve years. to play for the team I grew up rooting for, Aston Villa, and I did. What percentage of youngsters who cheer for a team actually show up to play for them? I also desired to represent England. Once more, I received three caps, one of which was against Brazil, but I did not receive fifty. What makes that a failure?

“I wonder to myself, ‘How on earth have you got the nerve?’ People that do criticise are usually middle-aged, pot-bellied, really scruffy hacks.”
