Teddy Sheringham thinks it’s best for everyone if Mason Greenwood leaves Manchester United permanently this summer. The 22-year-old has been advised to finalise his move abroad in the upcoming months, as a return following his season-long loan at Getafe would run the danger of widespread criticism.

Greenwood was taken into custody in January 2022 and charged with attempted rape, assault resulting in actual bodily harm, and controlling and coercive behaviour. He refuted all of the allegations.

In February 2023, the Crown Prosecution Service withdrawn all charges, citing the withdrawal of important witnesses and newly discovered evidence.

Following a six-month inquiry by United following his arrest, it was determined that Greenwood ought to continue his career outside of Old Trafford.

According to reports, manager Erik ten Hag and former football director John Murtough approved of Richard Arnold’s return in private, the former chief executive heading the study.

On deadline day last summer, however, there appeared to be a U-turn due to internal and external commotion, and Greenwood was hustled out the back door.

The England international left Getafe after 36 appearances, scoring 10 goals and dishing out six assists, but his future has been uncertain ever since.

Due to United’s desperate attempts to raise money through player sales, it appears that his performance in Spain has drawn the attention of major players, and he will go permanently in the summer.

Sheringham would be happy with the result given his close ties to Juventus and would advise Greenwood to stay out of the spotlight when it comes to English football.

Speaking on behalf of TG Casino, Sheringham said to Express Sport, “Yeah, I do [think it’d be best for all parties if he was sold].”

Mason’s situation would have made it extremely difficult for him to return to United and play there. There probably would have been some commotion.

“So for him to be playing abroad, not keeping a low profile but keeping a low profile in English football, I think it’s the best idea.”

Sheringham has questioned Greenwood’s ability to play for England again after the team’s opening Euro 2024 match against Serbia.

He went on: “It will be interesting to watch if he succeeds at Juventus [in light of rumours that they have reached a personal agreement] and begins to reintegrate into the England team.

“There will be a lot of uncertainty over whether he gets selected again. We’ll have to hold off and see.

The former United No. 11 is reportedly the target of Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund, and Napoli.
