Swansea chief criticises Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s TV takeover in the club’s programme notes.

Swansea City chief executive Tom Gorringe has criticised Sky Sports’ coverage of their Championship meeting with Wrexham.

Last week, Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, co-owners of Wrexham, attended a special match watch party.

They served as guest commentators for the match on Sky Sports Football, with regular coverage on Sky Sports Main Event.

At one point, presenter David Prutton had to interrupt their remarks and explain that their comments were’subjective’.

This came after Reynolds and McElhenney appeared to claim that Chelsea winger Alejandro Garnacho dove during their FA Cup match.

Wrexham beat Swansea 2-0, and its owners’ celebrations for both goals were broadcast.

Gor blimey

The coverage, however, did not sit well with Swans manager Gorringe, who penned his grievances ahead of their match against Coventry City.

In his BBC programme notes for Saturday’s home game against the Championship leaders, he suggested a lack of fairness.”The Sky Sports cameras will be present again, but hopefully the coverage will be more balanced than it was at Wrexham last weekend,” he stated. To raise awareness of the EFL product, it’s important to maintain a fair and balanced approach. In my opinion, the build-up to and coverage of the game itself left a lot to be desired about those specific scores.”

According to the BBC, Sky Sports believes its match coverage was ‘fair and balanced’, with former Swansea player Ashley Williams serving as a pundit.

Gorringe went further: “With the production being done by Rob and Ryan’s own production company, all of the guests and focus was on their team, there were celebrations with David Prutton – the face of Sky’s EFL coverage – and the advert for the commentary of the game failed to mention that we were playing at all.”Our workers felt like an afterthought, whereas our hosts were prioritized. As a club, we recommend a more thoughtful approach to handling similar circumstances in the future. This is a position I plan to discuss with the EFL next week.”

Wrexham’s end-of-season prospects

Wrexham’s victory over Swansea provided a significant boost to their chances of making the Championship play-offs.

Watford then defeated them 3-1, but a 2-1 victory away to Sheffield United on Saturday afternoon put them back on track.

Wrexham are seventh, trailing just sixth-placed Southampton on goal differential with seven games remaining.
