Throughout their history, Manchester United has struggled with goalkeeper-related problems. In addition to the Peter Schmeichels and David de Geas of this world, there have been many mistakes made by Roy Carroll and Massimo Taibi. Andre Onana, who recently made mistakes against Lyon in the Europa League, is the most recent to slip into that group.
Ruben Amorim’s lack of public support could put the former Inter Milan player in a similar situation to Jim Leighton, who said he still wouldn’t shake the hand of Sir Alex Ferguson after being abruptly dropped for the 1990 FA Cup final. The Cameroonian could end up being demonised from the United first team.
Eight Reasons Alex Ferguson Benched Jim Leighton in the FA Cup Final in 1990
After winning multiple trophies with the shotstopper, the Manchester United boss mercilessly fired him.

Ferguson used his ties at Aberdeen, where he had won multiple domestic medals and the European Cup Winners’ Cup, to bolster the Red Devils when he took Ron Atkinson’s place at Old Trafford in 1986. Goalie Jim Leighton was one of the players he brought along.
Leighton had made a name for himself as one of the top British number ones at Aberdeen. However, after making the transfer, the Scot’s luck drastically changed. Prior to the 1990 FA Cup final against Crystal Palace, which many thought would make or break Ferguson’s time at United, a lack of confidence resulted in a number of well-publicized errors.
Ferguson remained with the goalie for the championship game, although he committed a number of mistakes that day as the Eagles held the Red Devils to a 3-3 draw. The United manager had to make the difficult choice to either replace Leighton with backup Les Sealey or stick with him out of loyalty when the cup finals went to a replay back then. He made the decision to do the latter, even though he knew it would mentally ruin Leighton and sever the last of his precious self-confidence.
On the football, it paid off as Ferguson’s team won 1-0 at Wembley and Sealey kept a clean sheet. However, off the pitch, it was the last straw in the manager-player relationship.

One Lesson Regarding His Relationship With Ferguson
The Scot disclosed that following the FA Cup final, the two did not communicate.

Leighton talked about how his relationship with Ferguson had deteriorated after the 1990 final back in 2018. He even went so far as to say that he wouldn’t shake his hand if the chance to do so ever came up. He said that although the two had been chilly before the trip to Wembley, they had virtually stopped communicating after that.
Since then, we haven’t spoken and never will. In terms of strategy and gaming expertise, he was well ahead of everyone, but when it came to handling people, it wasn’t exactly the same.”
In his Amazon Prime documentary, Ferguson acknowledged that the two had not talked since, stating: “He never spoke to me again.” You either lose a buddy or someone you gave your best chance in life. But don’t worry, that was the right choice.
Peter Schmeichel, who became one of the best goalkeepers in the club’s history, was signed by Ferguson within a year of the 1990 victory. Before signing a permanent contract with Dundee United in 1992, Leighton had loan stints at Reading and Arsenal.
