Mainoo is heavily linked with a move away from his boyhood club.
It’s been just over a year since Sir Alex Ferguson branded academy product Kobbie Mainoo as “the heart and soul” of Manchester United, and things have changed tremendously since then.
Mainoo, formerly regarded as the future of United’s midfield for years to come, is now open to quitting his boyhood club this summer after becoming disillusioned with a lack of opportunities under Ruben Amorim.
The center midfielder, who played only two minutes in United’s Europa League final loss to Tottenham last season, was an unused substitute in the club’s first two Premier League games against Arsenal and Fulham.
Since suspicions about his uncertain future erupted on Monday, a number of teams, notably Spanish heavyweights Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, have contacted him about his availability, according to the Mail.
According to The Athletic, Mainoo is believed to prefer a move to the continent over a stay in the Premier League.
The 20-year-old, who signed a new contract with United until June 2027 last year, appears to be on the verge of leaving the club, a prospect that appeared nearly inconceivable after his breakthrough season under Erik ten Hag.
Sir Alex Ferguson was among those who praised Mainoo and fellow academy product Alejandro Garnacho when he spoke with Jamal Niaz in 2024.
When asked about the influence they had during their initial campaigns, Ferguson replied, “It’s the foundation, isn’t it? It is the heart and spirit of Manchester United, dating back to the days of Sir Matt Busby, who pioneered the trusting of young players.
“They are young. They are currently demonstrating the poise and confidence required to play in the first team without fear. It demonstrates the level of guts they possess.”
He went further: “It’s a distinction in human beings, some have the will to be that [fearless at a young age].”

Chelsea have long admired Mainoo and are presently among the favourites to sign the England international.
Ferguson, on the other hand, would never have permitted such a trade to take place during his time at Old Trafford, as the Scot and United’s former chief executive, David Gill, had a policy of never transferring a key player to a Premier League opponent.
Gill announced his views after United turned down Liverpool’s £6 million approach for defender Gabriel Heinze in 2012.
“On Monday night, we received a written offer, which we declined. The offer was big. However, we rejected it because it was in Liverpool. “We would not sell a player to Liverpool, Arsenal, or Chelsea,” Gill stated at the time.
“We made it perfectly clear to the agent. I could not have been clearer. If the club was still a corporation, things could have been different, but we don’t have some of those demands today.
