With the summer transfer window approaching, clubs throughout the country will have already begun to prepare for the 2026/27 season.
Sheffield Wednesday are currently the only Championship team that knows what will happen next season.
The Owls’ current season under Henrik Pedersen will undoubtedly be remembered as ‘unforgettable’ for all the wrong reasons, as takeover-related headlines continue to dominate the local press landscape.
Wednesday experienced the earliest relegation in EFL history last month as a result of only one Championship win all season and an 18-point deduction.
As a result, the final weeks of the season for the South Yorkshire club and their long-suffering fans will be spent finalizing a long-awaited quest for secure and long-term funding.
Indeed, David Storch was recently named the second ‘preferred bidder’ in the takeover process, but with his bid still falling short of the desired £30 million figure, which ensures debts are paid off and creditors, including Dejphon Chansiri, are paid in full, Wednesday are expected to start their first season in League One in three years with a 15-point deficit.
The club will also continue to operate under an EFL-imposed transfer fee restriction that will endure until next summer, as well as a weekly salary ceiling of £7,000 per week for individual players beginning next season.
As a result, the Owls’ ability to restructure their team at the outset of a possible new, and much more positive, period in S6 will be severely restricted.
And while it has already been revealed that the club is looking to bolster their goalkeepers’ union, they will undoubtedly face competition for a crucial target.
Sheffield Wednesday face Queens Park Rangers, while Blackburn Rovers compete for Dundee FC’s Jon McCracken.

Pedersen, of course, has been left with a depleted squad throughout Wednesday’s well-documented campaign.
One of the primary areas where the Danes have been extremely low on choices has been between the posts, with highly rated Northern Ireland international goalkeeper Pierce Charles suffering two injuries this season.
As a result, the Owls have had to resort to Ethan Horvath, Joe Lumley, Murphy Cooper, and Seny Dieng as backup alternatives on short-term or ’emergency’ loans.
Meanwhile, despite his injury troubles, Charles has continued to garner transfer interest due to his great potential and present talent, with Ligue 1 side RC Strasbourg submitting a transfer bid that ultimately failed in the most recent window.
As it remains to be seen whether the 20-year-old will remain at Hillsborough next season, Football Insider has reported the club’s interest in Dundee FC shot-stopper Jon McCracken, who will be available on a free transfer in June if his current situation remains unchanged, with the SPFL side yet to agree new terms with the 25-year-old.
However, it has been revealed that the Glaswegian is also being tracked by Blackburn Rovers and Queens Park Rangers, both of whom have had goalkeeping issues this season.
McCracken has made 34 appearances for the Dark Blues this season in all competitions, but has only maintained six clean sheets as his team sits eighth in the Scottish Premiership.
QPR or Blackburn Rovers could be more of an attractive move for Dundee FC’s Jon McCracken

With all three clubs interested in the shot-stopper due to his contract predicament at Dens Park, McCracken may have to select where he goes next.
While Wednesday’s historical significance is well-documented, a move to Loftus Road or Ewood Park may be more appealing for the overall advancement of his career.
Again, that could be determined by Michael O’Neill’s ability to keep the East Lancashire side from relegation in the season’s final weeks, as well as what the future holds for the joint-Rovers and Northern Ireland manager at the end of the season, with his country competing in the FIFA World Cup play-offs next week.
