Sheffield United defeated bitter rivals Sheffield Wednesday 3-0 at Hillsborough on Sunday, in an outstanding performance from Chris Wilder’s team.
While it was a significant win for the club, the Blades remain in a difficult situation, since they are still in the bottom three, while being only one point away from safety.
As we all know, Sheffield United has had a stressful season thus far, and the derby triumph cannot disguise the reality that they are grossly underachieving, with the choice to install Ruben Selles one that dramatically backfired on relatively new owners COH Sports.
Sheffield United is facing an uncertain future as owners consider sale.
For many, that managerial decision was the first major issue for the new owners, who took over the club from Prince Abdullah in December 2024.
After controversially dismissing Wilder following the play-off final loss to Sunderland, the US club has already had to return to the boyhood fan, while their transfer strategy, which focused on data-driven recruits, failed.
Nonetheless, it was surprising to see The Sun journalist Alan Nixon say that the Blades’ owners may already be searching for an exit strategy.
He says that they intend to review their plans for the club in the New Year, and that while they may seek external financing, a full sale ‘cannot be ruled out’.
Naturally, this sparked discussion among fans about the potential of the club changing ownership again, but it’s safe to say that many supporters would not miss COH Sports if a sale was agreed upon.
Another questioned whether their strategy was worthwhile, stating that a speedy sale would come as no surprise.
This supporter thought they had ‘gambled’ on owning a Premier League team, given Sheffield United were firmly in the mix for promotion when the purchase was concluded last season.
Another fan chastised the owners for the manner they have managed the club since their arrival.
Finally, the fact that they are even considering keeping the club implies that they are not as entirely dedicated as they should be.
Sheffield United requires off-field stability as they prepare for a challenging future.
If the Sheffield United owners were trying to sell the club so soon after purchasing the Blades, it would be reasonable to question their motives, and it would lead to the conclusion that it was all about earning promotion last season.

Realistically, the team is unlikely to gain promotion this season, and the immediate issue is to stay up, which means another year of parachute payments will be lost, making the process of returning to the Premier League much more difficult in the future.
As a result, it is critical that the club has the proper structure in place if it is to move forward, and fans reasonably doubt that COH Sports can offer that given the blunders made in recent months.
So it will be intriguing to see how this unfolds, but Sheffield United fans will want clarity on the owners’ long-term objectives and ambitions after what has been a difficult period under their leadership thus far.
