Seny Dieng joined Sheffield Wednesday on an emergency loan in February following Cooper Murphy’s injury.
Pierce Charles was already out, and their absences left Henrik Pedersen with few goalkeeping choices.
This prompted the EFL to approve a contract with Middlesbrough to bring the Senegal international to Hillsborough on a short-term basis.
The 31-year-old had fallen out of favour at the Riverside and was no longer recognized as a member of the club’s 25-man squad following the January transfer deadline.
Dieng appeared three times for the Owls during his brief tenure, playing in defeats to Sheffield United, Norwich City, and Southampton.
These were his first Championship games since Middlesbrough’s 3-1 loss to Leeds United in December 2024.
Seny Dieng sends parting message to Sheffield Wednesday.
Dieng’s tenure at Sheffield Wednesday has come to an end with Charles’ return from injury, having been out since playing in a 3-0 loss to QPR on January 4.
The goalkeeper has thanked supporters for their support over the previous few weeks, with the club providing him with a rare opportunity for playing time after a terrible 18 months in his career.
“Thank you to everyone at Sheffield Wednesday and the incredible fans,” Dieng posted on Instagram.
Liam Cooper responded to the goalkeeper’s message by wishing him the best of luck in his future career.

“Topman, go well, mate,” the defender responded.
Dieng was Middlesbrough’s first choice goalkeeper when he came from QPR in the summer transfer window in 2023, but he has since fallen out of favour and has not played a single game under Kim Hellberg.
This season, the Teesside club is vying for promotion to the Premier League, and Sol Brynn is their primary shot-stopper.
Dieng is below Joe Wildsmith, Jon McLaughlin, and Tom Glover in the pecking order, despite the fact that he has a contract with the Championship club until June 2027.
Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday’s relegation to League One has been confirmed following a challenging season for the club.
The Owls are at the bottom of the standings, with minus seven points, and the EFL has imposed two points deduction penalties totaling 18.
Pedersen’s side is on a 12-game losing streak and has won only once this season, with the Yorkshire club being in administration.
Sheffield Wednesday will return to play on Saturday, facing eighth-place Derby County at Pride Park at 3 p.m.

Seny Dieng’s emergency loan was beneficial for all parties.
Dieng joined Pedersen’s team for three games, and the deal benefited all sides because it allowed the goalkeeper to gain experience.
He had been out of the Middlesbrough team for quite some time, and he was expected to be unavailable for selection until the summer before Sheffield Wednesday stepped in, so he must have relished the change of scenery.
It’s a sign of the Owls’ situation that they needed an emergency loan at all, but they were able to move fast and bring in an experienced shot-stopper, which was a good business decision.
Perhaps it will even pave the way for his return to Hillsborough at a later date, if a new goalkeeper is required soon.
