It has been revealed in a humorous manner by one of Scott McTominay’s teammates that despite his outstanding performance on the pitch, he has become a “liability” for Napoli in one particular area off the pitch.
According to reports, McTominay moved from Manchester United to Napoli in the summer for a fee that was reportedly worth £25.7 million.
On the other hand, the sale was met with a range of reactions from United supporters, with Erik ten Hag, who was the manager at the time, reportedly expressing a desire to keep the Scotsman at Old Trafford.
In Italy, the 28-year-old has excelled under the direction of Antonio Conte, rapidly becoming one of Napoli’s most important players and even being compared to Diego Maradona in terms of the impact he has had on the team.
After 30 games, Napoli is only three points behind Inter Milan, who is currently in first place in Serie A. He has scored six goals and provided two assists in the league this season.
The Naples club was able to win the Scudetto in 2023, but they managed to finish in tenth place in the previous season, which was a nightmare for them. McTominay was a significant contributor to their return to being title contenders.
In order to assist him in achieving his goals, Conte concentrated his efforts on the English market towards the end of the summer transfer window. Romelu Lukaku, a former teammate of McTominay’s at Manchester United, transferred from Chelsea to Manchester United on a permanent basis.
In addition, the Italian managed to secure the services of Billy Gilmour, who was McTominay’s international teammate and had previously played for Brighton and Hove Albion.
This season, the 23-year-old has been in and out of the team on multiple occasions; however, he has started each of Napoli’s last four matches in Serie A. He was responsible for providing an assist to Lukaku in Napoli’s 2-1 victory over AC Milan at home on Sunday.
And while speaking to The Athletic, Gilmour revealed how special it is to play alongside McTominay for Napoli. However, he also admitted that he can be what The Athletic refers to as “a bit of liability” in one area apart from the pitch.
According to the Scotsman, “If you go out with Scott, it’s crazy,” he said. The Scotsman then went on to refer to what is described as his “distinctly northern European colouring” and his height, stating that he “sticks out.”
On the other hand, prior to making the move to Napoli, he conferred with a different international teammate.
“Lewis Ferguson, the captain of Bologna, and I have a pretty close relationship.” During the time that he was in Bologna, I followed him.
“I would enquire about Italy whenever I got the chance to see him playing for the national team. In all honesty, I was just interested in hearing it from a different source.
