‘Among the strongest midfielders in Europe’ is a former Manchester United player.
It has been suggested that Scott McTominay will return to the Premier League, a move that would not sit well with his old team, Manchester United.
Following a £25.7 million transfer from Manchester United, McTominay is playing brilliantly for Serie A leaders Napoli in the first season.
The infamously critical Italian media has been gushing about the Scotland international, who has scored 11 league goals for his new team.
He was referred to as a “genius” by Antonio Giordano of the venerable Gazzetta dello Sport following his brace against Torino on Sunday. The goals enabled the Partenopei to take advantage of Inter Milan’s unexpected loss to Roma and go up to the top of the Serie A standings by three points.
The Scudetto is well within their sights.
McTominay’s performances have unavoidably sparked rumors regarding his future, and the Lancastrian’s 54-year-old Neapolitan coach Carmine Gautieri, who is presently unemployed, has predicted another unexpected transfer between large teams.
When Gautieri spoke on Radio Capri, he was full of praise for McTominay.
His words, “He was an excellent purchase,”
“We are discussing a full player. He is quick, blends in well, is a skilled shooter, and can score with his head.
“I have to say that I was surprised, so congrats to whoever brought him to [Napoli].”
“Teams like Real Madrid or Manchester City could readily use a player with that profile.
“At the moment he is among the strongest midfielders in Europe.”
Gautieri has also played midfield for Napoli.
when a journeyman player, he played with his shattered hometown team when they began their post-bankruptcy return to the lower leagues.
Naturally, there is very little possibility that McTominay will play for Man City after spending 22 years on the books of their bitter local rivals, but his stellar ratings will undoubtedly have even the biggest European clubs paying notice.
With four games remaining against Lecce, Genoa, Parma, and Cagliari, Antonio Conte and Napoli are leading Serie A by three points, ahead of Inter Milan.
The championship would be decided by a play-off if the top two end the season tied on points.
