Sad update: The supporter taken unwell during the Charlton vs Portsmouth game has died, the club confirmed.

A Charlton Athletic fan died after the championship match was abandoned.

A Charlton Athletic supporter died after the club’s Championship match against Portsmouth was called off on Saturday due to a significant medical emergency in the stands.

In the 12th minute, play was halted while emergency services hurried to help a fan who had been ill in the Covered End’s bottom tier. Players waited on the pitch as medical personnel worked on the scene before referee Matthew Donohue instructed both teams to return to their locker rooms.

The match was officially called off about an hour after the incident, with the score remaining at 0-0.

Charlton later confirmed in a statement that the supporter died in the hospital.
Charlton and Portsmouth were both “devastated” at the news.

“The club would like to thank the Charlton staff and first responders who did everything they could, but sadly the supporter later passed away in hospital,” Charlton Athletic stated. “We thank the fans in attendance, as well as the Portsmouth players and staff, for their patience and understanding while this tragedy unfolded.

“Everyone at the club sends their heartfelt condolences to the supporter’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.”
