Cody Gakpo, Liverpool’s winger, is clearly a fan of Jurgen Klopp’s, but he didn’t exactly dazzle last night against the Republic of Ireland for the Netherlands.

Wout Weghorst’s early goal secured the Netherlands’ place in the Euros for next summer, yet the forward was lacklustre in the 1-0 victory over Ireland.

Although Ronal Koeman’s team had a fantastic night, Gakpo had a forgettable one and was widely chastised in the Dutch media for his lack of effect.

Gakpo was certainly not at his best in last night’s play against Ireland, according to Voetbal Primeur, and Football Oranje rated him 5.5.

And Klopp may face some problems at Liverpool as a result of this performance, especially in the build-up to the important Premier League encounter against Manchester City the following weekend.

With Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, and Mohamed Salah all doing admirably for their countries this month, Gakpo might be benched as the encounter at the Etihad Stadium approaches next week.

Furthermore, Gakpo will most likely start as a substitute against City on Saturday, as his performance last night left Klopp with few options when deciding on his starting team.

It’s understandable that Gakpo will be revved up to face the European minnows, who made headlines this weekend with their 14-0 loss to France, especially considering Gibraltar is the Netherlands’ next opponent.

In fact, if Koeman starts Gakpo on Tuesday night, the winger has the potential to have a significant impact. He is surely keen to go back on the scoreboard for his nation.

And Gibraltar is the ideal opponent; the £43 million Liverpool winger will undoubtedly be looking forward to this game as a significant opportunity to gain confidence.
