With one of the greatest goal-per-game ratios the Premier League has ever seen, Ruud van Nistelrooy is among the most clinical finishers in the league’s history. From 2001 until 2006, he played for Manchester United and won one English Premier League trophy.
The renowned striker for the Red Devils is currently leading Leicester City and is attempting to establish himself as a top manager. After losing to Liverpool 1-0 at home last weekend, the Foxes were demoted to the Championship, and it’s unclear if Van Nistelrooy will still be in the King Power Stadium dugout when the next season begins.
The Van Nistelrooy family has had a busy year since Ruud was named Leicester’s manager in late 2024 and his son was given his first professional contract by PSV Eindhoven, a Dutch powerhouse. Since he spent most of his juvenile career using his mother’s last name, “Slaats,” there hasn’t been much excitement surrounding the child of one of the best strikers in Premier League history.
Van Nistelrooy’s Name For Son Was Inspired by Man Utd Teammate
Liam Miller passed away in 2018 after a battle with cancer
Two years ago, Van Nistelrooy was asked where the name Liam originated during an interview with Gary Neville on The Overlap. It was an odd decision for a Dutch family to choose for their child, considering the name is traditionally British and Irish.
The former striker was quick to note that Liam Miller, a former colleague at Old Trafford, had served as an inspiration to him. After joining from Celtic in 2004, the Ireland-born midfielder obviously made a great effect on some of the players in the locker room. Neville was informed by Van Nistelrooy:
“At United, we played with Liam. Miller, Liam. I liked the name, and I can still remember it.
Miller would begin a journeyman career in England, Scotland, and Australia after making just 22 appearances with the Red Devils in two years. The former United player tragically lost his fight with pancreatic illness in 2018.
Rio Ferdinand, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, and other players participated in a match between Celtic and Manchester United following the heartbreaking news of Miller’s death. After his father played for PSV for three years before to relocating to Old Trafford, Liam van Nistelrooy will now try to leave his mark on the team.
