With the arrival of defenders Ayden Heaven and Patrick Dorgu in January, Manchester United made two signings under the direction of Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese coach is now shifting his focus to what is expected to be a significant summer transfer window.
Ruben Amorim has acknowledged that in order to fund his rebuilding of Manchester United, the club will need to sell a number of players from the roster during the summer.
Over the course of the past three years, United has incurred losses that are greater than three hundred million pounds. Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the minority owner of the club, has embarked on a ruthless cost-cutting spree, which has resulted in the dismissal of more than two hundred employees, with the possibility that another two hundred will additionally lose their jobs.
In light of this, Amorim has hinted at a significant departure of players from United during the summer, with the intention of acquiring the financial resources necessary to assist him in rebuilding the team and attempting to make it once again compete for the major prizes.
The likes of Casemiro, Antony, and Marcus Rashford, the latter two of whom are currently on loan at Real Betis and Aston Villa respectively, are among the players who have the potential to generate significant fees for Manchester United, which would allow the club to raise funds to assist Amorim in the process of recruiting new talent.
United was unable to make significant purchases during the January transfer window due to the fact that they were required to comply with the profit and sustainability rules (PSR) of the Premier League. Amorim acknowledged the financial pressure that the club is currently experiencing.
“That problem is not new, we knew the rules of fair play, we have a problem at the moment, but my focus is on that and not the other things,” said Amorim in response.
It is straightforward: in order to accomplish something, we need to sell players. But the preparation for the game against Tottenham on Sunday is the primary focus of my attention. The opportunity has now passed, so we must concentrate on the next game; after that, we will wait until the summer to make a decision.
Amorim provided the following statement regarding the possibility of loan players flourishing elsewhere, away from the pressure and scrutiny that they face at United: “Sometimes it’s like that, it can happen in any club.”
This is a club that is under a great deal of pressure, and in order to be successful in this club, you need to have a base that is comprised of younger players, talented players, and one strong base. However, at the moment, we do not have that. You must, however, find a way to deal with the pressure. On occasion, they go to other clubs, where they are more relaxed and there is less pressure.
Amorim made a subtle dig at his opposite number, Ange Postecoglou, following his assertion that there was a greater expectation to succeed at Old Trafford than there was at Tottenham. This was done while Amorim was discussing the pressure that was present at Old Trafford.
In his words, “I am a huge fan of [Postecoglou],” Amorim said. Because I come from a different culture, I am Portuguese, and the coaches in Portugal are able to adjust to my presence. I use one system in the moment, because I believe if you work on that system we adapt that at the same time, but we are not winning games.
“So I can understand the connection between me and Ange. We have the same problems but, with all due respect, I’m in a bigger club with bigger pressure, but I think it’s important to follow all of these principles.”
