Wayne Rooney, a legend of Old Trafford, said that the Portuguese coach was foolish to believe the Red Devils could win the Premier League. Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has responded to Rooney’s accusations. Amorim’s ambitions of winning domestic hardware in his debut season at United were dashed on Sunday night as Fulham defeated the team in the FA Cup.
Rasmus Hojlund struggled up top, and United’s woeful set-piece defence came back to bother them. It was very much the same old tale for the 20-time English champions. Unfazed, Amorim corrected the record by expressing his desire to make the team a Premier League contender once more and criticised Rooney for his remarks made after the game.
Amorim Defends Premier League Title Comments
The 40-year-old argued against Rooney’s ‘naive’ claims

Speaking at his post-match press conference after the loss, Amorim was asked what he thought of Rooney’s implication that he was being stupid to think he could win the title with United. The former Sporting Lisbon manager responded by saying that it would be foolish to believe that his team was on the verge of winning the championship, but he denied any naivete on his part, asserting that if he were, he wouldn’t be managing United at this point in his career:
“Winning the Premier League is the aim. To believe that we would succeed this season or that we will be the top contender for the upcoming season is to be foolish. I am aware that everyone is aware of everything right now. I am aware of how simple it is. I know it’s quite simple because I was a pundit when I ended my profession.
“Winning the Premier League is our aim. We want to win the Premier League as a club, but maybe not with me. Our goal is to perform better. I’m not naive; we are aware that we are in a challenging time. That’s why, at forty, I manage Manchester United.
