Manchester United should turn to a strict taskmaster to get back on track, says pundit.
Former Billericay Town midfielder Jamie O’Hara believes Manchester United should bring in a proven winner to offer some reality checks to their players.
United have won two of their first six Premier League games of the season, as their fortunes continue to deteriorate under manager Ruben Amorim despite a massive summer recruitment splurge.
The Red Devils signed Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko, yet they are statistically the Premier League’s most ineffective club in front of goal, a distinction to which they have grown used in recent seasons.
After finishing a few places above the relegation zone and losing the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur, United spent extensively in the summer window in an attempt to break their slump.
Amorim is rightfully and repeatedly chastised, but O’Hara is far from the first to challenge the players’ accountability and believes he has the answer.
“I’m amazed that no one has phoned Roy Keane and said, ‘Can you come in at Man Utd and be a part of what we’re doing here?’ because he is arguably Man Utd’s greatest captain,” remarked an obviously amazed and assuredly shacketed O’Hara on Sky Sports.
“He’s a leader. He is fantastic. When you observe him, he’s vicious, and you listen to him. When he steps into a dressing room, you’ll listen.
“He’ll lead by example. He’s not going to tolerate substandard standards. I can’t believe Manchester United haven’t called Roy Keane.”
O’Hara may be articulating an overarching viewpoint that many supporters can agree with, but the suggestion that Keane should be employed to give regular rockets like an angry cheerleader is an overly simplistic and entirely theoretical answer to a complex problem.
Standards among the players are undoubtedly a concern at Old Trafford, but O’Hara’s unconventional solution does not appear to have much grounding in modern football or the workings of a listed company.
“This is Man Utd” “Maybe [it’s] because he can’t be the manager,” said O’Hara.
“I’m not sure, but it could be because he’s too hot-headed. They want someone with greater tactical knowledge or anything.
“How come Roy Keane isn’t there at that football club, in the dressing room, every day at the training ground, telling them this is the standard, this is what Man Utd stands for, this is what we’ve established, this is how we do it… I can’t believe they haven’t done anything like that.”
Neither has anyone else. Bizarre.
