Following their defeat at EURO 2024, Marc Cucurella made an accusation, and Rio Ferdinand lashed out at Gareth Southgate over Harry Kane’s treatment.
Rio Ferdinand has taken issue with Gareth Southgate’s tactics in England’s Euro 2024 play with Harry Kane. Not at his best during the tournament, Kane did not appear to be at his best on Sunday night in the final versus Spain.
Even though he scored three goals and shared the Golden Boot, Kane’s effort fell short of his typical level. Unusually, the captain of England was changed in the quarter-final, semifinal, and championship games.
Although Kane has been chastised for dropping too deep too frequently, the runners surrounding him did not provide the required support for him. “When he’s been at his best, he’s had two flying wingers either side of him at Spurs and Bayern Munich, with teams that play the ball forward and have runners that are a threat in behind,” Ferdinand said, pointing out that England has failed to capitalise on Kane’s abilities.
Ferdinand used Kane and Marc Cucurella as examples to highlight how important it is to position players where they function at their best. “Kane scored over 40 goals for Bayern this season, but his style of play wasn’t appropriate for England,” he said. Cucurella, who was made fun of at Chelsea, performed well in this competition because he was utilised to his advantages.
