Rio Ferdinand, a former defender for Manchester United, has given an explanation for his silence following Liverpool’s thrilling victory against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League Round of 16 first leg at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday night. The French powerhouses had controlled the game, scoring 10 of their 27 shots on goal. However, Harvey Elliott’s first goal for Liverpool sealed an incredible triumph from the jaws of loss.
Liverpool supporters took to social media during the game to accuse the commentary team of TNT Sports, which included Ferdinand, Darren Fletcher, and Ally McCoist, of providing biassed coverage. The trio praised PSG’s effort throughout a large portion of the match, but Les Parisiens’ ten-year cycle of failure continued when they lost in Europe.
The fact that Ferdinand quickly declared Ibrahima Konate’s challenge on Bradley Barcola a red-card violation without even watching a replay drew criticism. He also asserted later in the game that a PSG forward was “just offside,” even though there was ample proof that the man was at least a yard ahead of Liverpool’s defensive line.

He has revealed why he didn’t say anything after Harvey Elliott’s crusher

Ferdinand was the target of a film published by the Anfield Agenda on Thursday morning that criticised the lack of objectivity in football commentary. One of the hosts is heard stating in the video that was uploaded on X: “You don’t need people like Rio Ferdinand there commentating on a Liverpool game knowing damn well he doesn’t want to see you do anything or win anything.”
Since then, Ferdinand has responded to that original post. His response (see post below) may be interpreted as a kind of message to the other Liverpool supporters who were criticising his apparent departure late in the game:
“Good morning, Craig. When Liverpool scored, I wasn’t on the gantry, as I was in the first half when I left the commentary booth to return to the pitchside after thirty-six minutes. Before the goal in the second half, I was ordered to do the same. Thank you.

As the most recent story illustrates, there will always be conflict between Manchester United players and Liverpool supporters, both current and former. But right now, the Liverpool supporters are probably feeling more content.
With a 1-0 victory over PSG, the Reds advanced significantly to the Champions League quarterfinals. Any club has a formidable task when travelling to Anfield, particularly when they have a deficit to overcome next tuesday night
