Harry Maguire’s last-second header gave Manchester United a 5-4 (7-5 on aggregate) victory over Lyon at Old Trafford, capping one of the most incredible comebacks in football history. After an incredible evening at the Theatre of Dreams, the Red Devils advanced to the semi-finals to play Athletic Club.
Before Rayan Cherki put the visitors ahead in extra time, everything appeared to be falling apart for Ruben Amorim’s team as Corentin Tolisso and Nicolas Tagliafico cancelled out the first-half efforts of Manuel Ugarte and Diogo Dalot.
After Tolisso was given a second yellow card, Lyon was reduced to 10 men for the duration of the extra 30 minutes. However, when Alexandre Lacazette scored from the penalty spot, the French team believed they had won an unexpected match in England. But Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes tied the score for the home team before Maguire’s soaring header in the 121st minute completed the unbelievable comeback.
Robbie Savage and Rio Ferdinand Totally Lose Their Cool
When Old Trafford erupted, the two went insane.
Old Trafford demonstrated why it is among the most recognisable football arenas in history. As Mainoo and Maguire discovered the back of the net, the ground erupted in noise. This also happened to the TNT Sports commentary team that evening, as two of the three members lost all composure during the emotional moment.
Shortly after the final whistle, video of the three men went viral. Rio Ferdinand, a former Man United player, Robbie Savage, and Darren Fletcher joined him in the commentary booth. Ferdinand could be heard yelling, “Oh my God,” multiple times while pumping his fist even more after Mainoo spun inside the area and scored the equaliser.
Just before Maguire’s header found the net, the greatest centre-back in United history may have said, “I believe in miracles.” Savage, who had previously called it, yelled Maguire’s name after Casemiro lofted the ball into the penalty area and then said, “I told you.”
Screaming and dancing around, Ferdinand and Savage lost control of their emotions. The former said, “No other sport can do this to you.” See the amazing video below:
