Richard Keys: ‘Man United Will Play Against Arsenal With Their Worst Ever Signing’

Richard Keys, a former Sky Sports broadcaster, has singled out one current Manchester United player as the club’s worst signing in history ahead of the 2025/26 Premier League season opener. Ruben Amorim’s side will visit title rival Arsenal at Old Trafford, looking to make an immediate impact after a challenging season last time out.

New additions Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko will look to lead the attack, but Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, and Antony will be absent despite remaining under contract with the club. However, one performer who may still be engaged has received harsh criticism from Keys.

On beIN Sports, Keys and co-host Andy Gray discussed Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma’s future after it was revealed that the Italian was free to leave the French capital. A number of Premier League clubs are supposed to be interested in the 26-year-old, with United being one among them, though the whispers appear to have cooled down, with the club instead focussing on Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba.

Keys and Gray were debating whether Donnarumma was worth a £25 million gamble, which prompted the former to inquire how much Onana cost United. Keys responded by joking about the nature of the arrangement to bring the Cameroonian to the Theatre of Dreams in 2023, before stabbing the knife in deeper.

“Well, it’s too much. Quite easily the worst purchase in Manchester United’s history, considering they gave up a world-class goalie [David de Gea] to get him.”

Onana has not appeared in any of Manchester United’s pre-season games thus far, having suffered an injury that kept him out of play for the whole tour of the United States. Instead, Altay Bayindir and Tom Heaton split the workload, with the Turk seeming the most likely to receive the nod ahead of the Gunners’ visit on Sunday.

Onana, on the other hand, has returned to training and appears to be available for the weekend, implying that he could still return to the pitch right away. It will be a make-or-break season for the former Inter Milan player, who must significantly improve to prove his worth at Old Trafford before Amorim decides to bring in a new number one.
