Celtic’s trip to Easter Road ended in disappointment, as Brendan Rodgers’ team lost 2-1 against Hibernian. Despite a strong second-half comeback, Josh Campbell’s early double was enough to seal the victory for the hosts.
Hibs Take Control Early.
Celtic fell behind after only two minutes, when Josh Campbell finished clinically past Kasper Schmeichel. Nectarios Triantis’ ball in the middle opened up Celtic’s defence, and Campbell made no mistake. The Hoops failed to answer, and their woes worsened shortly before halftime as Campbell rose highest to head home a Martin Boyle cross. The goal was first declared offside, but VAR overruled it, confirming the hosts’ 2-0 advantage.
VAR Drama Denies Celtic a Lifeline.
Brendan Rodgers made several changes at halftime, inserting Jeffrey Schlupp, Jota, and Reo Hatate. Celtic got back into the game in the 68th minute when Daizen Maeda pounced on a mistake by Hibs goalkeeper Jordan Smith to slot home. The Hoops battled for an equaliser and believed they had it when Maeda scored again in the 83rd minute, but VAR ruled the goal out after ruling that Alistair Johnston had allegedly moved the ball out of play before cutting it back.
Missed Chances and Late Frustration
Celtic pressed in the latter moments, with Nicolas Kühn and Arne Engels both having attempts blocked, but Hibs fought tenaciously. Eight minutes of additional time were added, but despite putting everything forward, Rodgers’ team couldn’t break through.
Title Race Remains in Command.
Despite the setback, Celtic currently lead the Scottish Premiership by 13 points, with Rangers trailing in second. While the performance was disappointing, the Hoops still own a commanding lead in the title battle. Attention now goes to Aberdeen at Celtic Park on Tuesday night, where Celtic will attempt to bounce back and maintain their firm grasp on the title.
