Real Madrid’s Surprise Midfield Target Revealed And It’s Not Zubimendi or Stiller

As the Club World Cup proceeds and Madrid’s midfield problems are highlighted, the club is quietly chasing an unlikely transfer target: Adam Wharton.

Although Martín Zubimendi and Angelo Stiller were previously considered top choices for Xabi Alonso’s setup, Madrid’s recent moves indicate a startling shift in strategy.

Zubimendi & Stiller No More Priorities
Martín Zubimendi of Real Sociedad was regarded as Alonso’s ideal midfield recruit due to his tactical expertise, serenity, and leadership abilities. However, his impending move to Arsenal has effectively removed him from Madrid’s list.

Stiller, praised for his Kroos-like style, was also regarded as a less expensive option. However, Madrid’s focus is now shifting to a bright Premier League player.

Adam Wharton, A Rising Star
Insiders close to the club say 20-year-old Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton is now firmly on Madrid’s radar. Despite being largely unknown outside of England, Wharton has swiftly established himself as one of the Premier League’s most promising young players, impressing with his coolness, passing range, and resilience under pressure.

Jude Bellingham is reported to have personally recommended Wharton to Madrid’s coaching staff. The two have spent time together in England’s junior and senior teams, and Bellingham believes Wharton’s temperament and ability set would suit life at the Bernabéu.

A Tough but Doable Deal
Securing Wharton will not be simple. Palace is not under any obligation to sell, having recently extended his contract until 2029. Initial rumours set his price tag at roughly €45 million, but Madrid understands that amount might rise dramatically, especially with other elite clubs tracking his progress. Moreover, Wharton’s senior England debut only strengthens Palace’s bargaining stance.

However, Madrid is seriously considering a move, particularly given continued concerns over midfield depth, which Franco Mastantuono alone may not be able to address for the lengthy season ahead.

A long-term investment.
Madrid’s midfield has to be overhauled, as Toni Kroos retires and Luka Modrić’s career nears its end. Adam Wharton may not be a household name now, but club management consider him as a player who has the potential to become an important figure in the future.

If finalised, this signing would continue Madrid’s habit of spotting and investing in young talent, similar to what they did with Bellingham, Valverde, and Camavinga before they became famous.
