At the beginning of the season, Manchester United was full of hope. With fresh support from Sir Jim Ratcliffe, United invested about £200 million in players, including Joshua Zirkzee, Matthijs de Ligt, and Leny Yoro.
Erik ten Hag had signed a new contract a few months earlier, but United was not as good as promised, and he soon lost his job following a string of subpar performances. It was thought that United would improve under the guidance of Ruben Amorim, who was selected as his replacement because to his extremely outstanding track record at Sporting CP.
But that hasn’t occurred. United is currently in a pitiful 14th place in England’s premier division, having gotten progressively worse under the Portuguese boss. They are headed for their worst-ever Premier League finish with just 39 points from their first 34 games.
Ralf Rangnick Gives Verdict on United’s Struggles
He was asked what is going wrong at Man United
Ralf Rangnick has previously been outspoken about United’s difficulties. He claimed that United needed “open-heart surgery” to address its issues during the 2021–2022 season when he served as the team’s temporary manager.
The Austrian manager, who still keeps up with his old team, recently shared his thoughts on United’s difficulties. “What’s wrong with your ex-club?” was a question posed to Rangnick while he was a pundit on Canal+ Austria. On social media, his scathing response, in which he criticized the club for being “significantly worse” in spite of spending so much money, is being widely circulated. According to football365, he stated:
“In the end. A few basic things need to be rectified, and since then, new players have cost £700 million, if not more. They are even much worse than they were in the past, according to the table.
“They might really still be able to save this season if they win the Europa League. since they’ll be in the Champions League by then. It will be interesting to watch what happens, but anything else would be disappointing.
The team was constructed using a four-back system, but they hired a coach in the midst of the season who prefers to play with three or five backs. When you see them play, you notice this, particularly when they play the opponents Manchester United often has to defeat in the Premier League.
“Yes, they have in the Europa League—typically, if you lose against Lyon, you’re out—but they’ve made it better. Naturally, the stadium had a significant impact.
Rangnick pointed out that despite their terrible Premier League performance, United might still win a trophy at the conclusion of the season and earn a spot in the Champions League. After defeating Athletic Bilbao 3-0 in their semi-final first-leg match in Spain, they are on track to advance to the Europa League final.
On Thursday, May 8, they will try to win the return leg at Old Trafford. If they win the match as predicted, the final will either be against Bodo/Glimt or Tottenham Hotspur.
