On Wednesday, Luis Enrique’s Paris Saint-Germain made history by defeating Barcelona 2-1 in the Champions League league phase.
The holders preserved their perfect start to this season’s Champions League with a thrilling victory over Barcelona.
With seconds remaining in normal time, Ashraf Hakimi exposed Barcelona’s high line and crossed wonderfully for Goncalo Ramos, who easily tapped past Wojciech Szczesny to secure all three points on the road.
After a strong start by the home side, who gained an early lead through Ferran Torres, it appeared that Hansi Flick’s team would double their lead.
However, teenager Senny Mayulu levelled with seven minutes remained in the first half, and PSG eventually won through Ramos, who replaced Fabian Ruiz in the second half.
With their recent victory over the Catalan giants, Paris Saint-Germain became the first team in history to win three consecutive road games against Barcelona in major European competition.
After winning their last two away games against Barcelona by 4-1 scores (in February 2021 and April 2024), they made it three with a 2-1 win on Wednesday night.
It was a special game for Luis Enrique, who had previously played for and managed Barcelona.
“It’s always wonderful to be in Barcelona because it’s my home,” he stated in his pre-match press conference.
“This is where I spent the majority of my playing and coaching careers. As always, being in Barcelona with the sun makes everything extra special.
“Barcelona is my city and home. I was here for eight years as a player and captain, and I also coached for a few years. I can’t say anything terrible about Barcelona. I’ll be grateful to them forever.”
He said, “When I return to Barcelona, I find many people who love me, and that’s the most beautiful thing I’ve gained in my career: the love of the fans.”
PSG will face Bayer Leverkusen in their next Champions League league phase match on October 21, while Barcelona will face Greek Super League side Olympiacos on the same day.
