Premier League: Journalist Ranks All 155 Summer Transfers – Spurs Ace 1st

With £3.19 billion spent by the 20 top-tier clubs over the summer, the Premier League transfer window has finally closed. With 155 players passing through the league’s administrative fax machine, supporters are now hoping that their new stars can fire them to meet expectations throughout the season.

There have been some extremely expensive transfers. Alexander Isak’s Deadline Day move from Newcastle United to Liverpool broke the Premier League transfer record with a fee of £125 million, surpassing their own record of £116 million for Florian Wirtz earlier in the summer. Tim Spiers, a reporter for The Athletic, has ranked everyone who went through the door, with a surprise inclusion at the top.

Ranking of Premier League Transfers: 155–121

Marcus Bettinelli, who joined Manchester City from Chelsea for a nominal price, sets off three Blues sales, including returning star Marc Guiu and Armando Broja, who signed for recently promoted Sunderland and Burnley, respectively.

Jadon Sancho is a surprising addition to the list, having joined Aston Villa on loan from Manchester United on transfer deadline day.

Premier League Transfers Ranked: 120–91

Jordan Henderson’s surprise free transfer from Ajax to Brentford leads the list of ‘uninspiring’ moves.

Elsewhere, promoted teams and clubs at the bottom of the league are featured, including Ben Doak’s £25 million move to Liverpool and Dango Ouattara’s £42 million transfer to Brentford.

More big-money agreements, such as Chelsea player Jamie Gittens’ transfer from Borussia Dortmund and Alejandro Garnacho’s move to west London, have also emerged.

More’marquee’ signings have joined this list, including Matheus Cunha’s move to Manchester United from Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier in the transfer season and James Trafford’s move from Burnley to Manchester City.

Newcastle United’s purchase of Yoane Wissa on transfer deadline day also falls under this category, as the Magpies overpaid for the Brentford star.

There are some £40 million-plus deals in here, including Arsenal’s acquisitions of Martin Zubimendi and Eberechi Eze, Manchester City’s acquisition of Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain, and Tottenham Hotspur’s signing of Xavi Simons. However, Wirtz’s move is remarkable in that it is ranked only 24th.

Isak’s signing is the’mantlepiece star’ of the Premier League’s window, but there are some significant acquisitions in here that aren’t far from first place.

Viktor Gyokeres’ move from Sporting to Arsenal ranks ninth, Jack Grealish’s comeback at Everton places him seventh, and Isak, shockingly, only ranks fifth.

Rayan Cherki’s move from Lyon to Manchester City takes bronze, Estevao’s move to Chelsea is just behind first place, and Tottenham’s acquisition of Joao Palhinha wins the big prize, with his defensive masterclass allowing Tottenham’s influx of attacking heroes to thrive under Thomas Frank.
