A statement has been issued by the Premier League in response to the brawl that occurred between Everton and Liverpool players following the Merseyside derby. It is anticipated that the police will initiate an investigation into the incident.
James Tarkowski, a defender for Everton, caused a commotion at Goodison Park when he scored a half-volley from close range to secure a 2-2 draw for the Toffees in the fourth minute of injury time of the second half.
Immediately following the blowing of the final whistle, Abdoulaye Doucoure, a member of the Liverpool team, ran over to the fans and made a gesture in their direction.
After that, Curtis Jones of Liverpool pushed the Frenchman, which resulted in a heated altercation between the two teams, with a number of players from both teams immediately joining in.
Before Liverpool manager Arne Slot was sent off for aggressively shaking the official’s hand, referee Michael Oliver showed second yellow cards to both Jones and Doucoure. It is unclear whether Slot said something that was inflammatory to Oliver at the same time. However, Slot was shown a second yellow card.
Following the conclusion of the match, the Premier League issued an official statement via its Match Centre Twitter account. However, the statement did not provide any explanations for any of the matches that were terminated.
“The referee issued second yellow cards and red cards to Curtis Jones and Abdoulaye Doucoure after the final whistle,” they wrote. “The referee also issued some red cards.”
“Arne Slot and his assistant Sipke Hulshoff were also shown straight red cards after the final whistle.”
Liverpool were unable to hold a post-match press conference at Goodison Park as a result of the sending offs of Slot and Hulshoff. This may have been a blessing in disguise for the Reds manager given the manner in which the match concluded.
As soon as the full-time whistle blew, the on-duty police officers were compelled to step in and break up the confrontation between the players.
An object that appeared to strike Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford during the mass brawl was thrown from the crowd, according to former PGMOL chief Keith Hackett, who claims that Merseyside police will be planning to launch an investigation. This is because of the ball that appeared to strike Pickford.
“Both teams will be charged for failing to control their players,” Hackett said in an interview with Football Insider. “We will see the result of that later today without a doubt.”
Additionally, the police will be conducting an investigation to determine who threw the bottle. This morning, they will be looking through video clips to see if they can identify the person responsible for the crime.
