Premier League confirm decision for Spurs vs Nottingham Forest following death of Pope Francis after Serie A games postponed

Following the passing of Pope Francis, the Premier League has issued a statement on the match that will take place tonight between Tottenham Hotspur and Nottingham Forest.

In accordance with a statement that was issued by Cardinal Kevin Farrell on behalf of the Vatican, Pope Francis, who was born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, passed away at 05:35 am (BST) on Monday (April 21).

“This morning at 07:35 local time (05:35 GMT) the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the home of the Father,” according to the official announcement.

“He instructed us to practice the ideals of the Gospel with integrity, bravery, and universal love, particularly in support of those who are the most marginalised and the poorest.

“With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God.”

Shortly after that, it was announced by Serie A that all four of the matches that were supposed to take place on Monday had been postponed. These matches were those of Torino vs Udinese, Cagliari versus Fiorentina, Genoa versus Lazio, and Parma versus Juventus.

Lega Nazionale Professionisti Serie A is able to report that today’s league games in Serie A and Primavera 1 have been postponed as a result of the passing of His Holiness, according to a statement that was published on the official social media channels of the league. An announcement on the date of the rescheduled games will be made at the appropriate time.

Since his passing, several football teams from all over the world have begun to express their condolences and pay tribute to him. AS Roma has stated that “his legacy of peace and solidarity will remain an enduring example.”

At the Real Madrid City training complex, the players of Real Madrid observed a minute of silence in memory of Pope. A statement that was published on the club’s website referred to Pope as a “enormous spirit of solidarity and support for the most disadvantaged and vulnerable people.”

Barcelona, Lazio, and Juventus are just a handful of the numerous clubs who have paid tribute to the 88-year-old player. Other clubs that have expressed their sympathies include Juventus and Lazio.

Tottenham Hotspur will play Nottingham Forest at the Tottenham Stadium later today evening in the Premier League. The match will take place at Tottenham Stadium.

Following SPORTbible’s inquiry to the Premier League on the possibility of a memorial service, the Premier League provided the following statement:

According to the statement, “We are not planning anything centrally; however, the clubs are free to decide whether or not they wish to do any tributes.”
