Foden returned to the City bench, going on in the final quarter of an hour in an unsuccessful attempt to ignite a late comeback. However, it was a moment after Palhinha increased the visitors’ lead that sparked social media outrage, with Foden spotted laughing moments later. A potential explanation has been provided.

While the timing of the laugh on camera may have led some to believe that the England international was laughing at his own team’s disappointing first-half performance or the error by under-pressure James Trafford that allowed Palhinha to make it two, teammates Jeremy Doku, Ederson, Matheus Nunes, and Abdukodir Khusanov appeared frustrated and upset. However, it looks that there could have been another explanation.
As Spurs extended their lead, the away end began to sing “Champions of Europe, we know what we are,” which appears to have caused Foden’s chuckle.
Of course, Tottenham won the Europa League last season, defeating Manchester United 1-0. And, while it is a big European trophy, such an announcement is normally reserved for clubs that win the continent’s highest prize, the Champions League.
City and Foden won the Champions League in 2023, and it looked that the comments made by Spurs fans were too much for Foden to handle, with other web sources pointing to the same thing.

A Tottenham fan stepped in to defend his fellow supporters, saying, “So why is Foden smiling at the Champions of Europe chant? “Are we wrong?” However, social media users agreed that the Englishman had every right to chuckle at the chant.
Unfortunately for the playmaker, Spurs would have the last laugh come the final whistle. The 25-year-old’s entrance made no difference, despite the fact that he had a fantastic opportunity to score before Micky van de Ven salvaged the day with some incredible last-ditch defending.
