Phil Foden has broken his silence after he was exposed to ugly chanting during Sunday’s 0-0 draw in the Manchester derby.
Foden, 24, began for Manchester City against their arch-rivals Manchester United in what proved to be a terrible spectacle at Old Trafford.
But it was not the activity on the pitch that was a talking point after the match.
During the first half of the Premier League match, Foden was the victim of nasty shouts that had been directed against his mother specifically.
During the news conference that took place after the match, Pep Guardiola, the manager of City, denounced the shouts, saying, “Lack of class.” You do realise that it is not United that is the problem, do you? People who are on the screen in international football, particularly football players, managers, and owners, are extremely exposed to the public on a regular basis. If I’m being really honest, I don’t know what’s going through the minds of the individuals who are involved with Phil’s mother. It’s a lack of character and class, and they need to be ashamed.
Guardiola continued by saying, “When the team is not playing at the level and standards we had anticipated, everyone appears to be different from what we were.”
“Phil, there is no question; I see the enthusiasm and the joy on his face throughout each and every training session. I want this to be the case… Obviously, the influence has not been. However, Phil is not the only one affected. If you look at the stats from the previous four, five, or six years, you will see that a lot of players are here in terms of goals and assists. However, this season, we dropped a lot of goals and assists, and not just one, but all of them (not just one). It is because of this that we are having difficulty creating or winning, yet the quality is there.
“Sometimes in a long career, you have seasons you are not – maybe last season he arrived at the peak in terms of the best player in the Premier League, he won the Premier League in the last games and his impact was incredible – and he will be back.”
Foden turned to social media at 10:38 p.m. on Sunday evening, uploading three images from the day’s events along with the message, “We keep going.” He did not respond to the shouts that were being directed at him over the situation.
He was awarded the Player of the Season title in 2023/24 after collecting 27 goals and 13 assists in 53 games during that season. However, the England international has not been able to build on his success during the 2024/25 season and has not been able to improve upon his performance during the previous season.
