Pep Guardiola’s bold choice for the best player in the Premier League would seem unthinkable now

During the current season, Pep Guardiola’s selection for the best player in the Premier League has experienced a significant decline in performance.

When Rodri suffered a serious knee injury, Manchester City’s dream of winning a record-breaking fifth Premier League title in a row turned into a nightmare. Guardiola himself has endured a difficult campaign as a result of this.

Kevin De Bruyne, Phil Foden, Bernardo Silva, and John Stones are just a few of the players who have turned in a string of disappointing performances since Rodri has been sidelined. Other players who have been City’s best players over the years have also been sidelined.

The consequence of this is that City are currently in fourth place in the Premier League table, twenty points behind Liverpool, who are in first place.

Prior to the month of March in the year 2024, Guardiola was of the opinion that Foden was the best player in the Premier League.

Following City’s victory over their regional rivals Manchester United by a score of 3-1, Guardiola made the following statement: “It is the amount of games he is playing.” In the past, he was a talented player, but now that he is older and more experienced, he has a better understanding of the game, particularly defensively.

Additionally, he is able to play in the middle, on the right, create moments and cut inside, play on the left, and score from the left. What am I supposed to say? He is currently the best player in the Premier League due to the fact that he is capable of doing so many different things. It’s incomprehensible.”

“When he scores two goals, it gives me more pleasure than the other stuff,” Guardiola said in reference to Foden’s defensive contribution.

We do not negotiate over that, and the individual who does not abide by that rule is not allowed to remain on the team. He is completely obsessed with football; it is his life. He is a delight, and his dedication to his work is truly remarkable.

Foden was honoured with the title of men’s player of the year by the Professional Footballers’ Association in August of the previous year. This honour was bestowed upon him after he scored 19 goals for the champions in 35 appearances.

Nevertheless, over the course of the 24/25 season, the Englishman has not yet demonstrated his best football performance.

Even though Foden has participated in 22 matches in the Premier League so far, he has only managed to score seven goals and provide two assists.

In the fifth round of the FA Cup, City and Foden will be back in action on Saturday evening when they face Plymouth Argyle. This match will take place in the fifth round.
