After leading Newcastle United to victory against Premier League leaders Liverpool in the Carabao Cup, Paul Scholes has ruthlessly dismissed claims that the manager should have a statue outside St. James’ Park. Local youngster Dan Burn and Alexander Isak both scored goals to help the team win 2-1 and turn the tide of their 2023 final loss to Manchester United.
With the victory, Newcastle ended their 70-year losing streak and won their first major domestic prize since the FA Cup in 1955. Howe’s accomplishment might be sufficient to solidify his place in club legend, but Scholes’ response to his being immortalised with a statue has generated a lot of controversy.

Scholes and co-host Jamie Carragher were asked on the most recent episode of the Fan Debate on the Overlap YouTube channel if Howe should be given a statue for his accomplishment on Sunday. The former Manchester United player responded by publicly laughing at the idea before brutally downplaying the team’s triumph.

Scholes, however, gave the Magpies some credit for their performance at Wembley Stadium, saying that Eddie Howe’s squad had complete control of the game from the first whistle and that Liverpool never looked like they were going to win.
Fans have criticised Scholes for his interpretation of the festivities, even though suggestions for a new statue in Howe’s honour may be a bit early given the rumours that the Englishman might be fired for failing to lead Newcastle back to the Champions League after leading them to qualification in his first full season in charge.
