The Lyon attacking midfielder is now on the brink of joining Man City
One of the hardest jobs in football is scouting. Predicting whether a teen will reach their peak is as much a skill and a science as it is a chance. However, given that Rayan Cherki’s market worth has now skyrocketed to £37 million (€45 million), the Red Devils should have taken notice when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer predicted that the team will sign the 15-year-old in 2019.
When Solskjaer saw Cherki’s talent, he was already regarded as a standout in his age group. Cherki recently scored and assisted on his France debut (see his goal here). Heavyweights Real Madrid, Juventus, Barcelona, and Bayern Munich were also interested in the prodigy, according to the Daily Mail. After six years, Cherki is still playing for Lyon, at least until Manchester City, their local rivals, moves to formally sign him and outshine their neighbors.
Although it’s puzzling that it took a major European team this long to get Cherki from Lyon, the wait might be coming to an end. With Man City now appearing more and more likely to sign him for a reasonable cost in the area of £30 million, the Frenchman recently stated his delight about joining Pep Guardiola’s winning machine.
His career path would have been extremely different if the Red Devils had taken a chance when he was still a teenager. However, it appears that City will benefit more. They might have found a natural successor in Cherki, a creative powerhouse who, at just 21, has already scored 29 goals and provided 45 assists in 185 games for Lyon.
