New winger signed: January transfer actions that can help Coventry City achieve promotion

Coventry City’s performance has slowed during Christmas, but they remain at the top of the Championship table.

Coventry City may have dropped 10 points in their previous six games, but they remain top of the Championship standings, eight points ahead of Middlesbrough in second. Even better, the Sky Blues are 10 points ahead of third-place Ipswich Town.

Frank Lampard has been a revelation since taking over at the CBS Arena. However, despite their outstanding campaign to date, they cannot afford to rest on their laurels.

It indicates that the West Midlands’ January transfer window might be very active. They have a good squad, but with some strategic thinking, they might push themselves over the line and into promotion.

Here are three moves Coventry City may do in January to improve their chances of promotion…

A new winger has been signed.

Coventry City’s wings will almost definitely be deemed a priority. They have some excellent players, such Ephron Mason-Clark and Tatsuhiro Sakamoto, but their depth is limited.

To get the most out of the important tandem and provide some much-needed insurance, the Sky Blues must sign a winger or two. Lampard and co. might benefit from making one long-term permanent signing and one short-term loan deal.

Abdoulle Manneh was one of those linked, although the rumors have since died down.

No Coventry City stars are allowed to go.

While players must pass through the doors, Coventry City cannot allow any significant assets leave. They have never been in a position like this before, and they must do everything in their power to keep it.

That means they must take a firm stance on sales and turn down large bids for their top players. This includes Haji Wright, Jack Rudoni, Milan van Ewijk, Bobby Thomas, and others, all of whom have been the subject of discussion for the past six months.

Big bids may come in from higher leagues, but with Premier League football potentially on the table next season, the Sky Blues should be well-positioned to maintain their key players.

Focus on increased depth.
Though this is a broad point, Coventry City needs to add depth. That was highlighted in their loss to Ipswich Town earlier this week.

While several of their promotion rivals have large squads to rely on, the Sky Blues don’t. The influence of their substitutes has faded in recent years and is not equal to that of those around them, particularly top two chasers Ipswich Town.

Coventry City’s Championship Squad Size

Team Squad SizeSquad size rank: Sheff, Wednesday, May 25th (22nd).
Coventry City: 23rd
West Brom placed 22nd and 24th.
As previously mentioned, the wing is an area to fix. There are other areas of attention, however.

Another central midfielder would be beneficial, and there is a case to be made for improved left-back and center-back play. It might be a busy window for Coventry City, but they cannot afford to lose their dominant position at the top of the Championship.
