Manchester City is moving forward with plans to expand the Etihad Stadium’s North Stand by £300 million, increasing its capacity to nearly 60,000 seats.
As the £300 million project moves along quickly, Manchester City supporters have seen their first glance at what the expanded Etihad Stadium will look like when it’s all finished.
The North Stand will have an additional layer added by City, bringing the stadium’s total capacity to over 60,000. Behind the stand, steelwork has already begun, and spectators can observe the height of the new building.
In addition to an additional level and around 7,000 seats, City is also constructing a covered fan park, hotel, sky bar and roof walk behind the stand.
Although supporters have previously seen computer-generated renderings of the project, a documentary has now revealed the size of the stadium when it is completed.
Construction-related video channel The B1M highlighted the workshop where a scale model of the stadium was created and gave a brief overview of the difficulties that would arise during construction, specifically with regard to the new North Stand roof’s shape and design.
The two hotel wings that protrude from the stand and the roof walk feature, which is akin to the one at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, are also vividly depicted in the model. With the hotel scheduled to open in late 2026 and the stand scheduled to open in time for the 2025–2026 season, construction has already started on those buildings.
The new roof appears to reach to the same height as the spires that are now visible rising into the East Manchester skyline, and the model also features two enormous spires at the top of the stand to support it.
