Gustavo Hamer, Sheffield United’s playmaker, is reportedly looking to leave Bramall Lane if his current club does not win promotion to the Premier League this season.
According to Football Insider, the Blades are hoping to move up the Championship table in the second half of the season under Chris Wilder, who was appointed as United manager for the third time in September, three months after being controversially replaced by Ruben Selles, whose six-game tenure in the Steel City proved to be nothing short of disastrous.
In recent weeks, there had been a significant upturn in fortunes in S2, but United were quickly brought back down to earth last Friday with a disappointing 2-0 defeat to West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns, with the aforementioned Wilder furious with his side’s second-half performance in the West Midlands, as they succumbed to Albion’s attacking duo of Aune Heggebo and Karlan Grant.
The setback, combined with other results over the weekend, dropped the Blades to 18th in the Championship table, with 23 points from their first 21 matches.
There was, of course, plenty of change at Bramall Lane in a summer that saw Wilder leave, with a couple of high-profile individuals securing moves to European top-flight clubs, including Anel Ahmedhodzic and Vini Souza, who went for Feyenoord and VfL Wolfsburg, respectively.
Hamer, unsurprisingly, saw intense transfer interest continue to surround his services following a stellar season in which he was named Championship Player of the Season at the EFL Awards in April, despite the fact that United were eventually relegated to the second tier after losing to Sunderland in the play-off final at Wembley.
It’s been a painful half-year for the Brazilian-born playmaker, who could leave the club if their fortunes don’t change dramatically in a short period of time.
Fresh Gus Hamer’s Sheffield United leaving attitude surfaces amid recent Chris Wilder contract revelations.

Hamer had been United’s standout performer in his first two full seasons in the Steel City after securing a high-profile transfer from Coventry City in August 2023, with the Sky Blues receiving a reported £15 million from United, who had returned to the Premier League months earlier under Paul Heckingbottom’s management.
The playmaker was a rare bright spot in the Blades’ terrible season, which saw Wilder return to Bramall Lane in December 2023 and score double figures in goals and assists.
After scoring 10 goals and assisting eight times during the regular season last season, Hamer became the subject of strong transfer speculation during Selles’ last transfer window in charge, but to many’s surprise, he would stay with the Blades, at least in the short term.
The 28-year-old has started 10 of his 15 Championship matches this season, scoring just once, aside from his magnificent halfway line strike against Birmingham City at St. Andrew’s in the EFL Cup in August.
Wilder recently disclosed that the Blades were hoping to see Hamer and Tyrese Campbell sign new contracts, with the former’s current term scheduled to end in 19 months.
“I have previously pressed that button on both of those gamers. We don’t want to lose players to free agents. “Unfortunately, they sometimes run it down, which is difficult,” he explained.
“Then you think there should be a succession plan for where you work based on that. But we’ve already pressed that button with Gus’s and Ty’s agents to see what kind of feedback and enthusiasm they get back.
Football Insider reported earlier this week that United are determined to keep Hamer at all costs at the turn of the year, despite prior reports that the midfielder would be free to leave Bramall Lane on various terms.
However, the same publication now claims that Hamer would seek a move to the Premier League in the summer if United do not end their present exile, having previously sparked interest from current Championship champions and Yorkshire rivals Leeds United.

At the moment, such discoveries suggest that Hamer will quit the Steel City club in the summer, with the Blades needing to make significant ground if they are to be promoted.
Wilder is presently preparing for a tough transfer window, as his side is only four points clear of the relegation zone and 11 points behind Hull City, who currently hold the final play-off berth.
The Blades’ next game comes at home against Birmingham City at Bramall Lane on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.
