Goalie Andre Onana of Manchester United’s bold claim that Ruben Amorim’s team is “way better” than their Europa League rivals Lyon has backfired as Nemanja Matic retaliated against the Cameroonian before facing his old team.
Onana feels heartened by the Red Devils’ chances of winning the Europa League in May, which would allow them to salvage an otherwise dreary season despite their current position in the bottom half of the Premier League league. He stated:
We will approach the game with a winning mindset since we are all aware of its significance. Even though it’s not our greatest season, we will still try to win something significant. We know a few members of this excellent team, but I don’t think we need to concentrate on them.
According to football365, he stated, “I think we are better than them; we just have to go there and show who we are.” We will win the game if we approach it with a winning mindset, remain focused, stick together, and play the game plan.
Onana, one of the top goalkeepers in the Premier League, went on to speculate about his employer’s prospects of making it to the penultimate round of Europe’s second-string competition: “Of course, it’s not going to be easy, but I think we are way better than them.”
Matic, who made 189 appearances for the Old Trafford team between 2017 and 2022, responded without holding back, calling the former Inter Milan glove bearer “one of the worst” goalkeepers in Manchester United history.
He answered, clearly annoyed by the disrespect: “I don’t know. You must have some sort of cover for saying that, you know. I respect everyone, Onana, but you must obtain the solution before you can say that.
“You should be careful what you say if you are among the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United history.” I would doubt myself if Edwin van der Sar, Peter Schmeichel, or David de Gea stated that. But before he speaks, he should demonstrate that he is among the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United’s recent history based on statistics. Thus, we shall see.
Onana Responds to Matic Criticism
‘At least I’ve lifted trophie with the greatest club in the world’
Onana did not take long to pour fuel to the fire, did she? The Manchester United number one suggested he would never mean to be “disrespectful” to another club on X (previously Twitter) in an attempt to heighten the anticipation for his team’s journey to France on Thursday night.
“I would never treat another club disrespectfully. We are aware that playing against a formidable opponent tomorrow will be challenging. Making our supporters proud is our first priority when it comes to performance preparation.
Onana responded to the 36-year-old by pointing out that, in contrast to Matic, he was able to win a significant trophy for the team last season: the FA Cup. “At least I’ve won trophies with the world’s best club. Others are unable to say the same.
With a Europa League victory under their belt, Amorim and his team will be looking to turn a disorganised campaign into something to look forward to. In other news, Paulo Fonseca’s Lyon is vying for a spot in the top four of Ligue 1, but they also have a trip to Bilbao in their eyes.
