Mohamed Salah has undoubtedly played a significant role in Liverpool’s recent success. It is impossible to overestimate the contribution the Egyptian made to the Reds winning the Champions League and the Premier League for the first time. He is the team’s all-time top goalscorer in the league. He is among their best players ever.
Having said that, he has done a fantastic job leading his teams to major cup finals over the years, but his record as a player in those games isn’t the best. In fact, a record of Salah’s cup final performances was posted online after Liverpool lost to Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final, which gave the Magpies their first major prize in 70 years. For Liverpool supporters, this is a concerning read.
Salah’s Record in Cup Finals
He’s not fared well
Salah has had several appearances in finals throughout his career, and according on information revealed on Reddit and released by Transfermarkt, it hasn’t been pleasant. He has been in 11 finals since 2017, when he played for Egypt in the African Cup of Nations final, although he has only managed to score two goals. He has never scored from open play in a match like that, and both of them came from the penalty spot.
In the 11 games, Salah has only been able to record two assists. For someone who is typically so dominant, this is a startling comeback. Even though Liverpool has been lucky enough to win a few titles during his tenure at Anfield, he finds it difficult to repeat his typical influence while playing in finals. Instead, other players typically step up and deliver the goods.
The Performance of Salah Against Newcastle
Against the Magpies, he was useless.
Salah had the opportunity to give Arne Slot his first prize as Liverpool manager on March 16 against Newcastle at Wembley Stadium, but his performance throughout the match demonstrated that he was unable to provide any significant assistance to his club. Throughout the game, the Egyptian only managed 23 touches on the ball and was absent for extended stretches of time.
During the ninety minutes, he only managed thirteen passes, one cross, and no shots on goal. It fell far short of his expectations, especially given how productive he has been in front of goal this season. In addition, Salah only completed one dribble and lost the ball six times against Eddie Howe’s team.
Although it’s well below what supporters had anticipated from the Egyptian during the 2024–2025 season, given his performance in the big championships, it’s not totally shocking to see him struggle once more in the spotlight.
