Middlesbrough manager Kim Hellberg drops Delano Burgzorg’s transfer claim may upset Bristol City.

Middlesbrough manager Kim Hellberg has complimented Delano Burgzorg following his match-winning goal against West Brom, insisting he has no plans to trade the attacker this month.

The 27-year-old has appeared regularly under the Swedish head coach since his appointment, though he may not have received as many starts as he would have liked.

Coupled with the signing of Leo Castledine from Chelsea and interest in Brighton’s Jeremy Sarmiento, there has been talk about Burgzorg’s future, with sources indicating that Bristol City are interested in the forward before the mid-season transfer window closes on February 2.

Kim Hellberg gives Delano Burgzorg a note following West Brom’s triumph.

However, Burgzorg has remained at the Riverside Stadium this month, and he made an important contribution against West Brom on Friday night, coming off the substitute to score a late winner at The Hawthorns with a clever finish.

Despite the arrival of Leo Castledine and Boro’s pursuit of Jeremy Sarmiento, many fans believe Burgzorg still has a role to play.

In an interview with the Northern Echo, Hellberg refused to comment on individual transactions, although he did laud Burgzorg for the manner he has played.

“I believe everything Burgzorg has done has been wonderful. “He has been working really hard and showing really good energy in every minute,” Hellberg remarked following West Brom’s victory.

“My primary concentration is on coaching the players who are present. I’m not thinking about who will move or anything like that. I am just coaching them, and he has been doing an excellent job.”

Hellberg’s comments are likely to hurt Bristol City’s prospects of signing the Dutch attacker this month, as Gerhard Struber looks to add another attacking face to his play-off-chasing squad.

The Robins may still be able to negotiate a deal if Boro need to balance the books in order to bring in new players, but if Burgzorg continues to score match-winning goals, he may be kept on Teesside.

Delano Burgzorg might play an important part in Middlesbrough’s promotion bid.

Given Boro’s current position in the standings, selling any player who has made an impact this month would be a significant risk.

Burgzorg may be a frustrating player, and he won’t be in the starting XI every week, especially if another new face arrives, but he showed against Albion that he can play an important role.

His movement and finish were remarkable, and Hellberg’s comments indicate he is still performing well in training on a daily basis.

With so much to play for in the coming months, Hellberg will want to ensure he has enough players to meet the expectations, so even if a reasonable offer was on the table, it would not be surprising if Boro tried to postpone any deal until the summer.

Ultimately, though, this month is all about supporting Hellberg and ensuring he has the quality and depth to guide Middlesbrough to promotion, so if Burgzorg leaves, a replacement must be found.

So, it may be a busy final two weeks of the window, but it is an exciting moment for Boro as they strive to join the Premier League.
