Rob Edwards left Middlesbrough in early November to become the new head coach of Premier League team Wolverhampton Wanderers, but things have not gone as planned for the Welshman at Molineux.
Following Michael Carrick’s dismissal at the end of the 2024/25 EFL Championship season, Middlesbrough appointed former Watford and Luton Town manager Rob Edwards as the club’s new head coach.
Luton were promoted to the Premier League in 2023 after defeating Coventry City on penalties in the play-off final, but Edwards was unable to retain the Hatters in the top flight, and they were promptly demoted to the second tier.
Luton elected to keep Edwards in charge despite relegation, a decision they would later regret, as the Welshman left the club by mutual consent in January 2025, with Luton hovering just above the relegation zone.
Middlesbrough owner Steve Gibson determined that Edwards would take up the mantle left by Carrick in the summer, and the Welshman would have Boro second in the table by early November.
Despite this, and having signed a three-year contract just months before, Edwards announced his decision to quit the high-flying club for Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers, where he would soon join, leaving a terrible taste in everyone’s mouths at Middlesbrough.
Fast forward to the present day, and Edwards has yet to pick up a point in seven attempts since taking over at Molineux, with reports surfacing that if he is unable to start adding to Wolves’ points tally soon, he may be fired, much to the delight of Middlesbrough fans.
Middlesbrough supporters will love Rob Edwards’ struggle at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Despite leaving them in a good place in the EFL Championship table, Middlesbrough fans will be disgruntled with how he left the club and relieved that he did not move on to greater pastures.
Indeed, Wolves were in deep trouble prior to Edwards’ appointment, languishing at the bottom of the Premier League with two points, and after seven games in charge, the only thing that has changed is that their goal differential has worsened.
Edwards has lost all seven of his games in command, and they will need to be at their best again to get anything out of Tuesday night’s game at Old Trafford.
Though Middlesbrough are currently winless in their last three games following a 1-0 home loss to Hull, they will be pleased with the choice to choose Hellberg as the club’s new manager going ahead.
Middlesbrough fans will, of course, be focused on their club and getting back to winning ways, but many will be able to crack a chuckle as they watch Edwards struggle at Wolves.
Middlesbrough hope to continue their promotion push under Kim Hellberg after Rob Edwards’ departure.

Middlesbrough appointed Swedish head coach Hellberg as their new manager at The Riverside to continue their promotion campaign.
Boro won each of their first four games under the Swede, putting a buffer between themselves and the play-off places, but they haven’t scored a goal and have only one point since their 2-0 defeat at Bristol City.
Middlesbrough fans will be hoping that this is merely a hiccup in his stay, rather than the beginning of a troubling trend.
Indeed, the Teessiders experienced similar blips in form while Edwards was in command, so alarm bells are not ringing just yet, but they will be hoping to recover sooner rather than later.
If Middlesbrough continues to succeed under Hellberg while Edwards struggles at Wolves or is fired, Boro fans will find the Welshman’s decision to quit the club even more amusing.
