Despite his good start, Marcus Rashford’s hopes of securing a permanent move to Barcelona have been dashed.
Following Rashford’s spectacular public dispute with Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim shortly after joining the club, it was widely assumed that the forward’s time there was finished.
The Englishman made only six appearances under Amorim before leaving to join another Premier League club Aston Villa before securing his dream loan move to Barcelona this summer.
With Rashford’s tenure at his new club off to a great start, many expected him to join permanently at the end of the season.
However, a recent rumor about the club’s financial predicament looks to have drastically lowered Rashford’s chances of staying at Barcelona after his current loan spell ends.

When the season finishes, Barcelona will have the option to buy Rashford for an agreed-upon cost of €30 million (£26 million), as outlined in the loan agreement with Manchester United.
Given his strong performance thus far, with his brace against Newcastle United clinching a win in the club’s Champions League opening, it is logical to believe that Barcelona will take advantage of this if he maintains his form.
However, according to The Athletic, the most recent La Liga numbers show that the Spanish giants’ official payroll limit has dropped by €112 million (£97.6 million).
This shift was primarily driven by difficulties with the ‘VIP zones’ lever at the Camp Nou stadium, which, according to a former club auditor, earned €100 million (£87.2 million) by selling 25 years of future profits from 475 VIP boxes at the stadium.
According to a statement from La Liga, Barcelona’s current wage ceiling as of September 2025 is €351 million (£306 million), down €112 million (£97.6 million) from February’s statistics.

When Rashford joined the club in the summer, Barcelona agreed to cover his wages for the duration of the loan after he accepted a 25% pay reduction, saving United an estimated £14 million.
