Due to Ruben Amorim’s strikeforce’s lacklustre play this season, Manchester United is still being linked to attackers. Mateo Retegui has emerged as a contender following some outstanding performances for Atalanta.
The Bergamo-based team extended their impressive start to the season with just one league loss since late September, and Retegui scored four goals against Hellas Verona on Saturday to bring his Serie A total to 20 for the season, including a hat-trick against Genoa. And because of his performance, he has been hailed as “world-class” and connected to the Red Devils, who are also struggling with goalkeeping this season.
‘Battling’ to Sign Mateo Retegui for Manchester United
Major clubs throughout Europe have taken notice of Retegui’s play, according to the Fichajes article. He made his debut at Atalanta this season, scoring 23 goals and dishing out four assists in just 33 games across all competitions. In the upcoming transfer windows, Atalanta may have to fight to retain the Italy international, though, as United is rumoured to be interested in the 25-year-old.

Since he has been such an important component of Atalanta’s attack this season, it is unlikely that they will sell him for less than the estimated €50–60 million (£43–51 million) that has been demanded for his services.
Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain have reportedly expressed interest as well, although the Red Devils have been searching for a new striker to bolster their lineup because of Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund’s subpar goalkeeping performance. After several successful seasons in league football, United may try to sign the Serie A star, even if Arsenal and PSG are still looking for a striker each because of the Gunners’ dearth of attacking reinforcements and PSG’s inability to fully replace Kylian Mbappe.
Born and reared in Argentina, Retegui rose to popularity in 2022 with 19 goals in just 27 games for Tigre, a team headquartered in Buenos Aires, and the following season, he scored 11 goals in 21 games. This led to a transfer to Serie A in Genoa, where he scored 20 goals in just 22 games this season for Atalanta, putting him on the map in European competition after only scoring seven goals in 29 games at the Studio Luigi Ferraris.
