Some people believe that Manchester United’s match against Crystal Palace is essential for manager Erik ten Hag to win.

This season, the Red Devils have played at such erratic levels of consistency that it has seriously jeopardized Ten Hag’s job at Old Trafford.

The Dutchman, who still has a number of supporters in his camp despite United’s on-field struggles, is attempting to convince new minority owners INEOS that he is the right man to lead the team through this most recent phase of transition.

Ten Hag has a point when he says that this season, United has suffered an unprecedented number of injuries. It’s possible to assign blame to coaching strategies and the way players are prepared for games in between, but the number of injury setbacks the team has experienced is truly astounding.

Ten Hag’s backline has taken the biggest hit ahead of the trip to Palace, but there are issues in practically every position.

Goalkeepers & defenders

The good news is that Andre Onana, the goalkeeper who has been absurdly overworked in stopping shots, is fully healthy and will start in goal.

The bad news is that injuries to Tyrell Malacia, Lisandro Martinez, Willy Kambwala, Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane, and Victor Lindelof have virtually destroyed United’s defense.

Casemiro will almost certainly be used as an emergency center-back again for United’s trip to south London. Jonny Evans is also not fully fit, but he might be thrown in at the deep end.

Midfielders

In midfield, things are looking up, especially since Mason Mount is back in action after missing months due to injury.

Although there were doubts earlier in the week regarding Scott McTominay’s and captain Bruno Fernandes’ wrist injuries, the former is anticipated to start for United as usual. Normally, McTominay would have had a little more time to heal from his recent knock, but Kobbie Mainoo needs a diligent partner in central midfield from the beginning due to Casemiro’s deployment in the backline.

Forwards

To the complete surprise of no one, Anthony Martial, whose time at United is coming to an end, is not fully fit due to a groin issue. Ten Hag recently declared that he has been training “partially,” suggesting he won’t be involved.

Alejandro Garnacho on the left might play more minutes if Marcus Rashford misses the fourth straight Premier League game. Even if the 26-year-old is healthy enough to start, Antony, who has been playing well lately, will be the right flanker and he will be kept on the sidelines from the outset.
