Manchester United supporters are perplexed by the club’s rumored plans to conduct midweek friendly after missing out on European status this season. The Red Devils finished 15th in the Premier League and lost 1-0 to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League, leaving Ruben Amorim’s side without a European appearance this season.
United’s inability to qualify for any of Europe’s club competitions provided an opportunity to rest players ahead of league fixtures the following weekend. However, the Reds intend to continue playing midweek, especially now that they have been eliminated from one of their two domestic cup competitions.
Manchester United in talks to hold ‘lucrative’ friendlies.
According to the Mirror, the team has been in negotiations about playing “a series of lucrative midweek friendlies to fill the gaping void left by their lack of European football.” According to the source, Amorim’s United team might go to places such as the United Arab Emirates for the potential friendly matches, as they have 11 free midweeks before Christmas.
The Red Devils immediately flew to Asia for a post-season tour in May, earning the club roughly £7.8 million. Those monies were apparently used for their summer transfer business, when they spent roughly £225 million on Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko, and Senne Lammens.
The club’s failure to qualify for the Champions League cost them an estimated £100 million. These finances would have provided a significant boost to Sir Jim Ratcliffe and United’s leadership, potentially enabling for additional overhauls of Amorim’s squad.
“Lost The Plot”: Fans Criticize Red Devils’ Midweek Friendly Plans
Both United and opposition fans have expressed their opinions on United’s idea to host midweek friendly instead of participating in one of UEFA’s three club tournaments. One fan lashed out at co-owners INEOS:
“INEOS has lost the plot. The initial story after losing the final was that “1 game a week is a blessing in disguise, it will aid the players in helping them understand the tactics better”; now you’re doing this? Berrada, Wilcox, and Amorim should lose their jobs.”
With Matheus Cunha and Mason Mount already injured, one supporter was not happy:
“We play too many games” then proceed to play games of their choice… It makes sense.
Another wrote:
“These men will take any opportunity to make money…” Side note: Where are they playing so I can go watch?
A Crystal Palace fan could not help but laugh:
“They really can’t help themselves from being memed at every turn can they.”
One fan stated:
“Embarrassing.”
Another added:
“Can’t recognise my club anymore.”
United will need to concentrate on their league performance before considering any potential friendly competition later this year. They are next in action on Sunday (September 14), when they travel to the Etihad Stadium to play Manchester City in the season’s first derby.
